I'm coming to Hawai'i! Maui on 8/19, O'ahu on 8/20. Check out the link: bnds.us/i6b3ox
Though unheard by many, this song - made popular by Iz Kamakawiwo'ole - was an anthem in Hawai'i when I was growing up during the 80s-90s. If you are not familiar with Hawai'i's history (pre/post overthrow) - I suggest you educate yourself and look it up.
I was lucky to be sent to Kaiapuni (Hawaiian immersion school) when I was young - it was a new adventure in learning, an immersion into the Hawaiian language where all day and all classes were taught in Hawaiian. Not a drop of English was spoken. We would cut and paste Hawaiian translations into science, history and math study books on weekends. We were the third class that ever was - 16 Guinea Pigs in a time when the revival of the Hawaiian language was a mission for the people of Hawai'i. At 5 years old, it took me less than a school year to become fluent in a language that my grandparents couldn't speak. At night, I would dream in Hawaiian. For 8 years, I considered Hawaiian to be my first language.
I've gone through many changes since - I switched to an english school in 7th grade. Quit Hula at 18. Moved to Los Angeles at 19. Became a starving musician at 20. Moved farther away to Kansas. But throughout those changes - the language, the culture, the koko (blood) - that never goes away. I look at my roots as an immovable mountain - when all is gone, I'll be found in you - still standing.
If you would like to support a great cause for the keiki of Hawai'i - check out Nā Kama Kai (nakamakai.org/) - a great nonprofit that educates and connects the youth of Hawai'i to the sea and land.

Because most people only want to consume garbage on KZbin? They dont want quality, just quantity. They want nonsense-saying influencers, bad pranks or even watching someone else screaming and playing videogames. I am just happy I am not one of those people. I try to find quality content here.

My favorite song by the late Brahdah Iz. Hawaii ‘78 continues to speak volumes even after all this time! Ua Mau kea O ka Aina I Ka Pono Oh Hawaii! The life of The Land is Perpetuated In Righteousness! Cry for the Gods, Cry for the People Cry for the Land that was taken away, and then yet you’ll find Hawaii. Tears would come from each other’s eyes as they would stop to realize that our land is in great, great danger now! Ua Ike Ma Kou Uwe OuKou.

This was one of the most lovely songs I have ever heard, but brings tears to my eyes. Powerfully emotional. I played it for my son right after hearing it and he was very impressed as well. Then I listened to it a few more times through my headphones to hear each note. Thank you for sharing this special tribute with us in the way that you have. I loved the looping version as well, which compelled me to check it out here.

Thank you for this song. I don't think a lot of people understand the (actual) history of Hawaii. My partner and I (both mainlanders) recently had the opportunity to meet the people on the island Molokai - our first visit to Hawaii. It was an amazing and extremely humbling experience. We told each other we would never visit there again - unless we were invited by an actual native person. Hawaiians are actually an endangered species ..

Hello! I live in Miami but since I stay connected to people who follow Tulsi Gabbard, I’ve been fortunate to learn about the Love and Kindness of the Spirit of Aloha 🌺 Thank You for this sad yet hopeful and Beautiful Song! Your song hit me in the Heart! We don’t have the same Love and Pride Hawai’ians have! As I have come to know more people from Hawai’i, I am amazed by the love and kindness and beauty of the people and not just the land! Thank you for the music and thank you for the love! I lived on Maui long ago and attended the then MCC. I was fortunate through my poverty to fall in with locals, and a hula troop. I wrote a poem/monologue from the point of view of the island as the protector requesting a step back against "progress". I asked my friends from the troop to come in and dance to it.. Honestly it was all done with virtually no planning, and the drama class we performed it for was less than 20 people, but the timing of the song the dancers chose (sorry forgot which one) and the monologue combined with the teachers choice of darkness with a single red spotlight on the dancers left the class speechless and silent for nearly a full minute after it's completion. My friends from the troop were all very young at the time (late teens) and were shocked by the reaction, but also saw clearly and were amazed at how the timing of everything in the monologue and song coincided, and I was really happy when they repeated parts of the monologue back to me siting the meanings in Hawaiin culture. I wrote very quickly from the heart those days and wanted to make it simple but to the core without trying to make believe I knew the deep roots of the culture. I'm not Hawaiin, but I was born into deep nature (literally my playground as a child), so essentially I wrote from the view of Nature which felt natural to me and I suppose is why I was accepted by (most) Hawaiin natives. There's another story about one who didn't accept me so readily involving a goat, but I will save that story for another day.. simple version, the matriarch of the community put him in check, and he was nice to me from then on out =D Oh yes, and the point!? This song and video brings me back to that moment every time !!! Mahalo nui loa Kawehi.

Kia ora, whanaunga. Ka nui te aroha o to waiata. Off the top of my head I think (but am not completely sure) it was Professor Albert Wendt who said somethig along the lines of post--colonialism means not only after colonialism but over it, around it and in spite of it. Your song is beautiful. Big love from Aotearoa/New Zealand to our Polynesian family.
