Kawhi Leonard's beef with the Spurs was the feud nobody expected | Part One

It’s incredible how much Kawhi Leonard fit the San Antonio Spurs' ethos. A reclusive team-first superstar, who rarely showed emotions and only cared about hooping. San Antonio is a model franchise that’s often been called bland, boring, or as I like to say - sauceless but whatever you wanna call them, their success on the court has spoken volumes.
On paper, Kawhi and the Spurs were a match made in heaven who appeared to be locked in with each other until the end of time. Except, the relationship that seemed to be unbreakable from the outside ultimately deteriorated behind the scenes, resulting in a messy divorce. But to truly appreciate the tenderness of this beef you have to understand that it’s arguably the most improbable feud that occurred in NBA history.

I genuinely believe had Zaza not have stepped under Kawhi's landing and caused his injury, the Spurs could have made the Finals that year. The Spurs were on fire that season and they seemed to match up very well against the Warriors even with their three headed monster of KD, Klay and Steph. They had a 2-1 record over the Warriors during the regular season that included two blowout wins and that first game of the WCF seemed to be another big win until Zaza changed fate. A real shame honestly, I genuinely believed that season would be the start of the Spurs' championship era with Kawhi as the superstar.

I remember watching that game. The Warriors had probably the most talented team in the history of the NBA in 2017 with the addition of Kevin Durant, and the best player on the floor up until Zha Zha’s foot happened, was clearly Kawai Leonard. I was so pissed seeing those front running Warriors get back into the game without the Spurs clear best player. That should have been a 6-7 game series with a healthy Kawai.

That has to be the most extrapolated 28 minute sample size in the history of the NBA. Yeah the Spurs had them beat… for one game. But it’s a best of 7 series. The regular season and Playoffs are different but even if you want to use that, one of those wins was with their first game ever with KD. And one of the regular season matches, KD was injured. So can we please add some context?
@paperhag
@paperhag Жыл бұрын
@@goldenstatewarriors9418 It's honestly not much different than how Warriors fans extrapolate KD's 10 minutes of playtime in the finals vs the Raptors. Not only that the Raptors swept the Warriors in the regular season even with KD! So you guys cant have it both ways. Kawhi was a killer in that series and we will never know what the result would have been if he and Tony Parker had not been injured.

I remember when Derrick Rose was going through his injury and some people were questioning his toughness and I remember this entire time of Leonard's injury. Here is the thing about injuries and why teammates or media members should keep quiet unless they know more, our bodies don't respond the same way every time. Just because Parker had the same injury doesn't mean Leonard's body would respond the same way, our bodies are incredibly complicated, just because the vast majority of bodies may respond to a certain injury one way means very little for any specific person. Players have said for close to a DECADE that playing under Pop is really hard because of the way he talks to players. Treating them like they’re dumb. They ALL say it was Duncan keeping them in line because he was okay with his coaching style, it was inevitable that it’d fall apart because the likelihood the next guy after Duncan would be okay with it was low. You can’t treat NBA stars like they’re children and expect everyone to be okay with it. When you have an all-time great who is fine, then everyone will follow, if that isn’t there then people rebel.

Excellent video! I think Kawhi is the quintessential introvert and wanted/wants no part of being a leader for any team...anywhere...anytime. He wants to be the best he can be, for sure, but worrying about others and trying to lead them to greatness (a la Tim, Tony or Manu) was/is something he wanted no part of, no matter what the rest of the NBA world thought during his Spurs days, or thinks now. He's at his best when he can be himself, and should just be judged accordingly, rather than harshly simply because he did/does not try to live up to others' expectations.

Well, the Spurs also have one dirty former player before, small forward too, like Kawhi. As far as I remember, he is the one who is trying to injure Steve Nash before. I don't know if the Spurs tolerate that, but if they did, then I think they deserve the karma.

Another infuriating aspect of this beef (from a Spurs fan perspective) was that when SA *tried* to say ok you know what? You're hurt, let's put you on IR for the season, Kawhi's camp strung them along. They'd give the Spurs dates for his return, then blow past them and just kinda shrug. That's the context of Manu saying "we fell for it a week ago again" (12:00 mark). The team/his teammates were desperately trying to hold down the fort for a playoff seed and hoping Leonard's return would bring the relief/contention, but Leonard's camp was playing the Spurs' organization the whole time. SA tried to take him at his word and shut him down, but Kawhi didn't want that, either, just wanted to keep everyone in limbo and drag SA med staff's name through the mud in the process. Him and his uncle are shady dudes.

It was with the Spurs that KL's alleged tendinopathy was reportedly at first suspected. This condition appears to cause him to be absent from games more than less, but he refuses to be seen by team doctors & goes to his own doctors. Popovich once opined that KL "is not a leader". KL has done a good job concealing his career-ending medical condition while playing very little and living off very huge contracts. I believe that is why he ultimately demanded to leave the Spurs & refused to stay with the Raptors. Bet you he will leave the Clippers when his contract is up. Wonder who KL will victimize next...

Why does everyone even pop insist that Tony parkers injury was "worse" than kawhis. If kawhis took longer and made him have trouble walking, wouldn't that make his injury by literal definition "worse" because it took him out longer and caused more pain? What metric are they using to gauge it?

As a San Antonio Spurs fan, I can say that I did not expect this. Kawhi Leonard's departure was probably the end of the Spurs' strength of many years of Playoffs. Now they haven't even made it there since 2019. Kawhi Leonard has been to the Toronto Raptors (2019 Championship) and the Los Angeles Clippers. Patty Mills' departure to the Brooklyn Nets before the 2021-22 season was also heartbreaking to the Spurs' as Mills would get better. Now, the question is, after more than twenty years of making the Playoffs before missing the next three, how long will it be before San Antonio make it back there?

The benefit of doubt the Spurs get is kind of absurd. Kawhi Leonard got injured and it took him a long time to recover from that injury, despite the Spurs organization having a great track record, just because you have a good history, doesn't mean you'll always do right. They didn't believe Kawhi was truly injured, and that disbelief is why this relationship fell apart. The Spurs had every incentive to rush Kawhi back from injury, Kawhi didn't feel comfortable with his body coming off that injury. A lot of people are gonna argue that he was faking so he could get a trade LA, and my response to that is why? He was gonna be a free agent in 2019, why miss a season of basketball and risk doing all of this just to get to LA 1 year sooner?
@jlolopez9623
@jlolopez9623 Жыл бұрын
absolutely correct. He was never given respect. He was being told what to do by the Spurs. Tony P put it clearly out there and said his injury was 100X worse and that he would never go outside the spurs organization for doctors. They wanted him to play through the injury. He would have blown his knee earlier had he stayed with the spurs. With load management and injury management the knee went out what 3-4 years later? He win a ring with Toronto with load management. The spurs said no load management play throught it.
