My search for water shoes began on my first kayak trip 6 years ago. I started with Chacos. Then Crocs (bad idea in and on the Manistee River), several other name and not name brands but I eventually landed on the same NRS neoprene zip ups your have, 2 years ago. Very functional for portaging too. They can get quite hot in the sun which sucks, but I typically slip them off once I'm cruising. And worst case scenario, there should be some cool water not too far away to dip them in. Love your videos and especially you TX folk's rivers! So cool looking.
@GatewoodBrown3 жыл бұрын

What about safety gear? Simple things like a whistle attached to your life jacket. I also have a belt cutting knife inside my life jackets pocket, like the seat belt cutters for cars, if your jacket snags on something and pins you under water, you wana be able to cut yourself out. I also carry a small first aid kit with the basics. I see alot of people buying green or camo tarps/ tents, but a bright orange or red one is better for visibility when you need to signal for help. Great question! Remote designs is my company so take that into consideration. However, I can be objective about things and shoot you straight. The backpack and dry bags I offer work very well. So far 0 returns or warranty issues. I trust it with my most expensive electronics and have never been let down. The yeti is an awesome bag, no doubt. But if I were to recommend a premium option it would be the fishpond thunderhead series. Just be prepared to spend well over double what you would on remote designs. The fishpond offers more features and keeps gear waterproof just like remote designs. For me, remote designs is a great value proposition if you’re looking to get a dry backpack or roll top.

Hey there, fellow Texas Yaker here, suggestion on water shoes! Try out Adidas Terrex 285s. Huge fan on the grip on the slickest rocks and good foot protection for your toes. I did North Llano last year from your videos and found the same spots. I got a buddy who lives near Houston, any good spots over there to see?

Pretty nice setup. I also cannot imagine my camping trip without coffee. I personally prefer Turkish coffee because of versatility. I can brew it in my camping pot. What about canister stove? What are you using?
@GatewoodBrown3 жыл бұрын
Camp coffee is a must! The stove situation is something I aim to improve in the future. Right now I lug around a butane burner that’s decently light but bulky haha. May do something like a jet boil or msr stove
@dbf_913 жыл бұрын
@@GatewoodBrown I have an msr whisperlite international. Can't be more pleased about it. This thing can work on white gas, kerosene, gasoline and with some effort i could made it work on jp8. All camping trips and field exercises it goes with me so I don't have to choke on MREs all the time and poop bricks after. I bought it used from eBay for like $20. If I were you I'd fumble there to save money.

@@dbf_91 I’ll have to check that out for sure. Sounds like something I’d be gunning for. Thanks for the tip!

@@GatewoodBrown don't get a regular whisperlite. It only works on white gas. Whisperlite international is more versatile. And please! Please! Try Turkish coffee. There's always a line around my stove for coffee in the field lol.
@GatewoodBrown3 жыл бұрын
@@dbf_91 thanks for the distinction. I’ll give Turkish a try! I never had it. And agreed, we make better coffee in the field than most people make at home. That’s probably why we enjoy the Java so much! All of us take our coffee seriously haha. I was always mystified that people make such a routine with coffee, yet they drink terrible quality stuff day in and day out

Hi Gatewood, looking to go to Buffalo National River to do kayak camping in the future, but new to this and wanted to test the waters in Texas first as I am in ATX. Just found your videos and curious as to where exactly you are locating the CFS for various rivers throughout the state? Looked at USGS, but not well versed on it or how to interpret what is ideal for the different rivers.

The usgs gauge will always have a town it’s located in so you can check the town on Google maps and see how close it is to your launch point

Love kayak camping! I live on the coast, so it's sea kayaking and really a totally different set of gear and packing. Small drybags, lots of loose gear that can stuff in the little spaces in the hatches. Closer to backpacking than car camping.

Hi gatewood thanks for the great list. I was wondering how you have liked your DLGJPA water shoes you had recommended off Amazon I just ordered a pair and like the fit but was wondering how well they hold up I wanted them for just a lightweight kayak shoe here in Florida. Thanks for any advice
