In late May, 2022 Justin and I had a full weekend open that we had dedicated a long weekend for a kayak camping adventure. We chose the White River as it is a designated Natural and Scenic river in the state of Michigan, and is supposed to be a hidden gem. We planned as best we could, and headed out to this river that neither of us had paddled before. We made some rookie mistakes, and ended up on a portion of the river that had very much been taken back by nature. We massively mistook how many miles we were going to be able to cover upstream from the dam in Hesperia, Michigan. This is our adventure.

First multi day trip i ever did was the white from hesperia to white lake. Still one of my favorites. Yes lots of down trees but that just makes it feel more wild.

That is what we were attempting to do here, just didn’t work out for us. I am sure we will be back, this river is a gem!

@@BRUjank i would highly suggest it. Just go into it expecting a few portages and some shoving over trees and it’ll be a great time. Good luck👍🏼

The White River has been like that since at least the mid 1970's, the last time I canoed it. There were at least two rental outfits at that time too

Oh wow! It’s always been on the wild side i guess. I have been told that from Hesperia downstream it’s pretty navigable.

It’s a great river to fish, kayak or float. We live where the white empties into White Lake.

Fun trip, but save your $22 next time and camp anywhere on the river! From Pines point south for several miles is basically nothing but open camping areas of national forest.

Thank you for the tip! I really appreciate that. That was our first time on the river and because of the day we were having, we just decided to call it. Looks like Hesperia downward is the way to go.. can’t wait to check it out.

May I suggest a kayak harness that goes around your shoulders much like a backpack without the pack... but with a hook or attachment point where a bow rope off the kayak can be connected. Instead of you arms and shoulders pulling on an angle, your harness pull point from the center of your back. More power; direct center pull and less stressful. You may have a backpack harness to can alter to work..

I have never even heard of a shoulder harness for a kayak! Haha that’s awesome. We definitely did not plan on being out of the boats as much as we were on this one.. I will look into a harness tho for other adventures where we might be having to traverse more land portion! Thanks for the tip!!

My dad recently got a property right out side of white cloud and the bridge at 1:31 is a place where we stopped to fish on the way home lol
