Kayak Fishing - How To Catch Rockfish. In this video I provide tips and tricks on how to catch rockfish, cabezon and lingcod on lite gear, tackle and gear, and storage.. We are out kayak fishing for rockfish and lingcod at Oregon's Pacific City on a rare, semi calm, winter day.
We catch a variety of rockfish, cabezon, greenling and lingcod and the action is hot. I show where and how to target and catch rockfish on small swim baits.

A great day OTW 4sure. I grew up on the Pacific coast and caught my fair share of all species. Relocated eastward in '98 and picked up walleye fishing. I learned quickly that setting the hook on a jig on the first bump simply yanked the bait from the fish's mouth. Merely reeling down until the rod is fully loaded then giving a wrist flick to drive it home resulted in a 100% hook-ups. Give it a shot. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised that each Gulp bait results in a hook-up.

What an awesome summer-like day! I was watching your bit on pre-tied leaders and time wasted. I used to do the same thing, but found that once I simplified my gear down to just a jig head (at whatever weight) on either mainline, or sacrificial mono leader. No terminal tackle to dink with. I can can clip off one jig, and tie on another in seconds, and mostly without even looking.

C_insayin, that’s for watching. I like your way. I’ve tried to skinny down my gear and carry way less than I used to, but can still thin things out. Let’s get out and fish together soon.

Oleg Yashchenko, thank you for watching and your support. I would love to have longer videos and have hours of raw video from each day but most people like videos under 10 minutes according to KZbin. Maybe I’ll start doing longer videos this year and see how people like them. This was Pacific City. I spend lots of time there in the summer if you’d like to join some day.

Great job at over harvesting.

MonkeyTwitch, thanks for watching and your comment. "Over harvesting"? Please explain what you mean. I follow all harvest rules, bag limits, seasons and regulations. We have very strict rules in Oregon. There's no over harvesting here. Also, I don't know where you get your proteins, but this is one of the ways I feed my family. Every bit of these fish gets used either as table fare or carcasses used for crab bait. Please feel free to enlighten me on your view of "over harvesting." Thanks for watching.

@@DADventurerNW Sure. I get that. However, just because the limits are 5-10 Rockfish, why go out and catch the limit? I mean, how many are you going to eat? I get if someone goes out once a month, harvests the limit and stores the food. But, I'm guessing you're out there more than once a month. Not just fishing. I know it's not just individual fishermen. I know commercial fishermen harvest a lot more. But, when we're seeing that the numbers aren't like they used to be, we need to back off some. Salmon fishing sucked this year. I know it's not all due to overfishing by sports fishermen. But, I know guys that go out every day (when open season), and harvest fish. Heck, I wish they'd cut back on the commercial and Native American's harvest numbers to allow more for the recreational fishermen. Seems to me there's a lot more value for families to fish together than Native's who just sell to markets a majority of their catch. Anyhow, it just made me wonder if all those were necessary. I know Rockfish in the Puget Sound are very limited because of overfishing.

@@monkeytwitch6463 Thanks for your reply. I respect your opinion. For me, in the summer, I may fish once per month in this area due to my work schedule. At the time, we were allowed 5 rockfish plush 2 ling cod. For a family of 4, that amount of fish would be 2-3 meals. I have gone out many days where I only take a few fish, just enough for dinner that night, especially if I'm camping. Other times, I'm looking to put some fish in the freezer for the winter. I'm all about conservation and following the rules and there are many factors that have contributed to overfishing and declines in quantities of fish. My biggest issue is the amount of fish that get wasted, not eaten or freezer burned and thrown out. Up in Puget Sound, you are right, Your rules are even more restrictive and complicated. Hopefully these restrictions are helping restore the fish populations and the money we pay for licenses is helping increase the resources we have available as sportfisherman. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions.

@@DADventurerNW nice job dude. I'm glad that you took the time with your response because it made me think I was too harsh on you without knowing the full story. But then, I'd rather do what I did then say nothing because others might not stop to think about their actions and just take as much as they can get, whenever they go out. I respect how you sometimes just take what you need for a meal. Or, for the freezer...no problem with that. I just subscribed to your channel. Just noticed you have some videos on Mushroom harvesting. which is something I need to learn more about. You've gained a fan. Hopefully, others will read both our comments and think without attacking me, or you. Funny, social media and we actually had a civil conversation. LOL

@DADventurerNW
@DADventurerNW 2 жыл бұрын
Matthew Barron, thanks for watching and your question. I made the scent holder myself with some 1/8” inch bungee cord. Just tied 4 loops in succession small enough to squeeze the uncapped bottle through and then screwed the cap down. Last loop attached to a T-Rein zinger chord ams onto the kayak. Pretty simple and it works great.

Roasting Shack Specialty Coffee Roasters, thanks for watching and congrats on your new kayak. For clothing, it depends on where you want to go. If you are going in the ocean, you will need a wet suit or dry suit, depending on your comfort level. If not in the ocean, waterproof paddling pants or tops are great, if you need protection from the water, otherwise you can wear anything you like.

@@johncoon3132 looking at the forecast, April 3rd looks like a no go in the ocean. You want to See 1-2’ waves with a period of 8 seconds or more. Unless you are a surfer, that day is going to be very sporty. For your safety gear, if you are going to do surf launches, a helmet is an excellent idea. Take it from someone who took a 12’ piece of Tupperware to the head going through the surf.

Why did you let cabezon go? Is that a bad fish to eat?
@DADventurerNW

I A, great question. Cabezon are delicious and that one was legal size. However, I caught that one after catching 5 rockfish. Cabezon counts toward the 5 rockfish limit. I was targeting ling cod at the time. Had I caught it earlier, I would have kept it.
