Kayak rolling is often considered an advanced skill, for expert kayakers only. Most sea kayakers never even try to learn it. And a lot of sea kayak instructors don't think it is even a useful skill to have. One argument against learning to roll is that you will not be able to do it when the conditions are nasty enough to roll you upside down. Although rough conditions will make it harder to roll, if you take care to learn the basics really well, you will have a roll that you can count on when you need it. And that's what this rolling video tutorial is all about.
Some will ask what is the point of learning to roll a kayak if you know how to do a self rescue? The problem with a self rescue is that it will not help you when the conditions are rough. Only a solid roll can get you out of really rough conditions.
Another reason to learn how to roll your kayak is that the rest of your skills will be limited until you do. If you are not comfortable rolling back up, you probably will not want to push yourself to edge your kayak to the limit, and that will keep you from developing your skills. On the other hand, if rolling a kayak is fun for you, then you are free to practice edging your kayak to turn, and to practice your bracing.
Rolling a kayak and bracing are actually the same thing. You use the brace to keep you from capsizing, and you do the brace while upside down when you are capsized. Same motion. What happens when you get good at rolling is that you also get good at bracing, so you will find yourself upside down a lot less often. By learning to roll effortlessly, focusing on the most important principals, you are in fact developing a very powerful brace.
The focus of this tutorial is on what to do with your body. Not much of it has to do with the paddle, and if you try to focus on what to do with the paddle before you have practiced your body movements, you will find that you get sloppy, and your roll becomes unreliable. We are not very good at focusing on many things at once.
This video will show you how to develop torso rotation so you can have an effective high brace, and a roll that you can count on.
If you don't rotate enough, you will be fighting to keep your kayak from pushing you under, your paddle will have a tendency to dive, and you will not feel in control.
If you rotate your torso, you increase the range of motion to something like this. When you are in rough conditions, and you don't know where the next wave will hit you, that extra range of motion will make the difference between rolling up, or falling back under water.
That extra movement will also allow you to push the kayak to the point where it wants to turn upright. It only takes a little more flexibility but there is a huge difference between a kayak that is pushing your head down underwater, and one that is letting you float to the surface and breathe.
Another reason to rotate your torso is to present your back to the water. It's like having a very large paddle for bracing. If you develop the habit of rotating before your back hits the water, you will have a very powerful high brace, and rolling up will be easy.
Rotating the torso also helps keep the paddle near the surface of the water. All you have to do is hold the paddle on your chest. No thinking required here. Hold it against your chest, and just focus on doing the roll with your body. If you don't rotate enough, your paddle will likely end up deep, and it won't give you much support when you try to recover.
If you think that learning to roll is hard, and will take years of practice,
sign up for this free video tutorial. I brake it down to easy to follow steps, and include exercises you can do to learn the roll, before you even get on the water.
discover that rolling is fun and not hard at all
