Wife and I needed another vehicle to transport rental kayaks. We needed to install a roof rack on her vehicle which is a crossover suv. Her vehicle had side rails and needed crossbars. We find some universal crossbars and kayak cradles with high reviews so I'm showing how I installed them. Follow their included instructions if you decide to purchase your own for your vehicle.

There are all sorts of brands. I just chose the one with most reviews on amazon. Seems to work well for my needs. We've only used it for kayaks like the ones in video. They are around 50lbs. I would use different cradles for larger fishing kayaks....maybe V cradles or just strap upside down on crossbars. For REALLY heavy fishing kayaks i would look at Yakima or Thule brand roof rack solutions.

Hello, just curious how tall is your garage door opening and if you can fit your Rogue in the garage with the kayaks on the roof? Also, if you cant fit in the garage with kayaks, how tall would you need the garage door to be? Your answer would be very helpful to me. Thank you!

*Is This For Heavy Fishing Kayaks?* I would not use J-cradles for heavy fishing kayaks. This rack is rated for 150lbs or less. I would trust it more with kayaks under 100lbs since that is how I have been using it. I would likely strap large heavy fishing kayaks directly to crossbars and use bow and stern tie down lines to keep kayak from sliding forward or backward. These are used to create bow and stern tie down spots. amzn.to/2X8Pn2C

I used to car top my kayaks. But just switched over to a trailer for them this year. Car topping my 75 pound fishing kayak was a pain. Plus at some point Id like a pedal drive and I know they are even heavier. I also got tired of the wind noise the roof rack caused on my highway commute back and forth to work.
@aaronirwin5586
@aaronirwin5586 4 жыл бұрын
Some of the pedal kayaks are really light now without the pedal drives in many are less than that 75 pounder. I got the slayer 13 which I think is over 100 and I love it but I would have went lighter and smaller if I wasn't so tall and even then I might have got a light one and just put on a different roomy seat. I have a truck with Tbar though so I just roll that kayak on wheels up to the bar and slide it up into the bed easy and I never move it without wheels! Would never be able to car top it without possible injury or scratching the vehicle up if by myself... p.s. the native slayer 13 has been great especially since I take it into the ocean and the weight is great in the larger waves but just makes for limiting options on transportation. My wifes Kayak is like 60 pounds and easy to carry solo and we don't use wheels for that at all even though it is a 12ft extra wide kayak it is quite light.

Im about to buy a new kayak that weighs 65 lbs. I currently load my 50lb kayak on my car using this exact set up. Do you think the 15lb difference is going to be an issue? I can easily get the 50lb over my head but i tried an 80 lb one and it was like lifting a ton lol.

I bought this same Kayak rack and the nuts on the bottom broke halfway to where I was going to launch, what did you do to secure those nuts?
@cup_and_cone
@cup_and_cone 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but your straps are routed incorrectly. The backside is correct, but the frontside is wrong. The straps should come down inside front of the rack and around the crossbars, like this: maloneautoracks.com/images/D/132%20%28700%20X%20540%29%20%236.jpg The way you've routed them puts a squeezing pressure on the j-rack and relies entirely on the rack's mount to prevent uplift. Slipping the strap around the crossbar locks the kayak tighter, and uses the strap to help hold down the kayak rather than just the mount.

*Not saying your way isn’t better, but the way I show in video is how the company advertised.* I like your way better, but for liability reasons I try to show how the manufacturers of the products I’m showing advertise.

If you're not going to reinforce it with nylon nuts make sure you use the other ones that are in there too there should be two nuts on each bolt, not one.

Get a trailer even if its a kit. They are fairly simple to build. Car topping bigger kayaks kind of sucks. Plus the roof racks are nosey on the highway.

The crossbars on our Equinox are plastic and don’t have a lot of room from front to back. Should these work for it? We already bought this product but the plastic crossbars and smaller spacing from front to back make me nervous.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly you will have to use your best judgement or contact manufacturer of the product. If it doesn’t seem solid then you definitely don’t want to risk it. A kayak creates a lot of resistance and force when you are driving down the road. For liability reasons I can’t give such advice on vehicle specifics. I’m just showing how we used them on our Nissan Rogue. This product worked well for our vehicle and my in-laws , but might not be idea for every vehicle with side bars.

*What Other Brands Of Roof Racks Do I Like?* My favorites are Yakima and Thule. However, lately I think Yakima has some of the best paddlesports options. Both companies make great products. This CargoLoc brand from Amazon has 4000+ positive reviews and definitely does a great job with my kayaks which are mostly under 80lbs, but Yakima and Thule are no doubt better long term solutions for permanent mounting and now worries in harsh environments. www.yakima.com and www.thule.com/en-us/us

I have to get COVID tested today actually by coincidence. Not looking forward to it. Might film the experience. Haha. I’m ill at home so I’m editing footage from few weeks ago. @@KayakDIY You don't have time to be sick Justin! Actually I don't think the Covid test is all that bad. I've had my nose operated on (hockey accident when I was 10, that was never fixed) and over the years I've had probes cameras, etc. Stuck up there. It just kind of tickles. Or sometimes it makes me feel like I'm going to sneeze. You should probably film it if they let you. It might help people get over the fear of being tested. I read it on Facebook all day long about how people won't get tested because it's scary to have something that long shoved in such a small nose. Apparently they all missed that day in school when we learned we have a network of tunnels there, sinus cavity, etc.!!!

I found this to be much more difficult to put together then suggested. I definitely would have spent more for something that didn’t take so long to put on and take off. Definitely faster to wash car by hand now and never go to car wash as this would take a good two hours to take off and put back on.
