Kayak self rescue techniques are easy to learn and the kayak self rescue ladder rescue is an easy DIY that can double as a stand up assist strap as well as a flip line for fishing kayak self recovery. The kayak self rescue ladder is also known as a kayak stirrup, sling or a kayak safety ladder. Regardless of what you call it, it can have three functions - as a kayak rescue ladder, as a stand up assist rope as well as a kayak flip line to recover a sit on top kayak.

Try this method passing the attached line under the boat bringing it up through and over your near side handle. When you exert pressure on the foot loop it helps to transfer some of that force down towards the water on the far side instead of up and towards your re-entry. You should still stay a low as possible, but this method should give you some additional leverage.

Yes, but if looped through the handle , then that is the new center of force and isn't any different than above. Plus far more challenging when you are trying to get back in as quickly as possible.

A assist ladder rope is a great idea for bass boats as well as all boats.... I fell into the water recently and was alone. My bass boat floats high in the water. I barely was able to get back into boat. Took me over 15 min of trying. It would of been disaster if the water would of been cold. Great video.

Good stuff. I used to teach cold water survival, and one of the things I taught was the 1-10-1 window. 1 minute-10 minutes-1 hour, each corresponding to the phases of cold water emmersion. Most people don't understand that as soon as you're submerged, you are dying. The body is being rapidly chilled and will eventually breakdown if not bought back to homeostasis. Gross motor skills is needed with survival techniques. There is no time for fiddling around.

Hi mate. Fishing and living in Northern British Columbia where the ocean can get deathly cold. I have come out/off my kayaks; let it be windy, wavey or pulling in salmon, so many times and needed the recovery ladder. Watching your video helped me fine tune the foot step portion of my rig. Yes... the foot hold was too big and I ran into the same issues regarding the pvc, however, I use a hollowed out piece of Arbutus. I just watched this video and was very impressed with your explanation and fine tuning of the rescue ladder. Thank you for all your videos. Some really are life savers!!!!!

Hi there and greetings from the U.K. I’ve been kayak fishing off the Dorset Coast of England for a few months and continually looking at ways to stay safe. Great video. I have made up a rope with stirrup and it fits nicely in my PFD. It works very well. I try and keep the ‘cockpit’ area clear of kit like rod rests etc so I can get back on without obstructions. I flipped over today. I'm very careful as to avoid sudden movements, but the tipping point came fast. I was able to flip the kayak back quickly, put a rod and few items that fell back in but I could not get into the kayak. Instead held on to it with my left arm on the starboard side while swimming and using my right arm to move the pedal drive. I was about 300 yards from shore but made it thanks to having the life jacket on. Only lost a hook remover and a small lure bag, everything else had leashes on. I will practice this technique, thank you!

What a great video! I flipped my kayak in the first few outings when I first got it. I watched re entry vids and thought I had the technique down pat. However a deep water flip surprised me on just how difficult it is when you don’t do it correctly. Lucky in in Australia and the water isn’t cold. It took some time and effort to get back on. To flip an overturned kayak try reaching under the boat and pull the boat towards you. Works well when you are fighting wind and waves especially. Stirrup is a great idea.

Great video! I had already incorporated this on my kayak prior to seeing this video because I discovered that trying to launch myself onto a wet, upside down, 33" wide kayak while wearing a pfd, was a bit too much for me. Im about your age, but you are in much better shape. This former jarhead isn't as lean or mean as I used to be, lol. The rope trick works and is awesome. Thank you for your service as well as all that you put yourself and your kayak through for our benefit! Btw, paracord has never failed me but a thick, high vis rope may be easier to locate in a pinch.

I have the narrower Hobie (revolution) so it is harder to stay low while getting in.... I made one of these rescue steps but my feet kept going under the kayak. To be successful, due to my lack of upper body strength, I had to remove my pfd, step on the step & use my other foot on the pdf for extra boost. Worked great!

Great video! I'm brand new to yaks. I was pondering the idea of adding a second wider stirrup that would lie in the center of my boat about center width of the boat. For a hand hold in conjunction with the foot stirrup to aid in re-entry. In adding the hand hold I believe it would aid in keeping your center of gravity lower to boat and adding a solid hand hold until you could reach the other side of the yak. (I have a rec kayak that is 70 lbs and 38" wide) Any thoughts on this?

Had another safety question though - do you think you should tether yourself to the Kayak. Thinking if you flipped and the current took the Kayak away from you quicker than you can swim to it?

Suggestion - because time is critical and you will quickly loose the use of fingers as they get colder. You should us a carabiner clip on the boat end of the rope. Also, when I tipped over I did not have any rope with me, but I did have my paddle. Stick you paddle through something on the kayak that will hold and step onto that while staying low. Where do you store your recovery stirrup? I was thinking about a small bag with a velcro closure....maybe attach it to the side of the seat? It needs to be in an accessible location.

I am going to modify it so it will work as both my stirrup and stand up assist strap. The stirrup has to be longer than the stand-up strap so I will tie a dropper loop where I want to connect the strap and leave a loop at the end for the stirrup. I'll use the same carabiner/spring clip for both applications. That way, I can leave it attached to my front carry handle.

Great design, one thing I would say is if you can attach it on the other side of the boat and run it under the hull it would transfer weight to the other side making it much more stable, HOWEVER, there is a major differnce in the difficulty of using it this way as it will drift under the boat as you put pressure on it, the solution to this would be a second line you can run under the boat and use as a anchor point for the foot step.

Good lesson, Steve, and I need to rig one of those. I know if it happened, I would have to remove, or slide my rod holder fwd to provide enough room for me to get aboard fwd of the seat. I would also mention that folks that have a lot of gear mounted in tracks on the gunwales be aware of those items when the kayak is rotating if flipping is needed. The gear may protrude further out from the rotation arc than that of the hull. Getting a face full of rod holder, camera boom, or depth finder may ruin the whole process. With all due respect to your Army background, LTC, you would have done well in the Navy. 👍

They are still telling us not to get in the water - even the ocean - because of runoff from Hurricane Florence. I hope the advisory is lifted by the end of the week. If you made it slightly longer and instead of bringing over the top of the deck, you passed it under your kayak then up through the grab handle on your side then down into the water, when you step on it your creating downward force on the opposite side of the boat to offset your weight and, hopefully stabilize your boat for re-entry. Not tried it on a sit-on-top as I don't fish, but I've done something similar with a sea kayak using a sling around a paddle placed over the deck (so sling over the far side of the paddle, under the boat, back over the near side of the paddle & dangle a loop down to stand in)

Once you put your foot in the ladder and start to push, you go flat on the water and into the kayak.

I would drill 2 holes on the same side & near each end of the PVC stirrup tube. Put 2 knots in the line as far apart as those holes and thread the line through the holes so the knots are inside the tube. That way it's impossible for the tube to slide off centre. I was thinking about fixing the line to the centre of the kayak so that is is equally available to mount from either side. However, that would mean you couldn't use it to right the boat, but it does mean reduced time to get back in once the boat is righted. This raises a question about safety redundancy. If you only have one stirrup & it breaks, what options remain? If you have a stirrup on each side, you have a contingency option or after flipping the boat upright, you have a stirrup already to go on your side of the boat, no wasting time getting the boat turned around. You may also like to look at what the sit in crowd do with paddle float re-entry. Personally I don't need a paddle float to re-enter a sit in, I can just grip each side of the cockpit and haul myself across the boat as you demonstrated but without a stirrup or paddle float, then just rotate to sit on the back deck, put feet in cockpit & slide in. But I'm only medium height, lean & have good balance. Not everyone can do that & it's less reliable in rough water anyway, so it's a mistake to depend on that, or any single system as your only re-entry option. "Be Prepared".

Why wouldn't you have the rope go away from you and under the boat? Between the downward force on the far side generated with your foot and the downward force generated from your torso pulling the near side down, they would even out and prevent rotation, right?

It is worth investigating, but everything I have seen on flip lines has the rope across the top. Just thinking about the feet... instead of pushing down, you end up having to push up. I think that would be more difficult and have your legs end up partially on the boat with your head potentially under water.

You would have to jump further across, too much weight would be at the end. It is doable if you do it very quickly and are able to get on immediately

I find it easier and quicker to flip from the side and enter from the rear.

The flipping the kayak back over is good. The getting in the kayak would go better if you entered from the rear. Don't have a pool to check it out but if you were getting in from the rear the chances of flipping the kayak over go way down.

Good suggestion, however, I do not think I could climb over the seat given its configuration. On a kayak with a smaller seat back, no issue.

That works, but unless one has that at the ready at all times I can see a disappointment brewing. I would not entirely depend on this method to recover yourself...learn how to re-enter and rite the boat without gimmicks first.
