Looks like good practice. One suggestion is to look at the working end of your paddle when you do a sweep. That will make your turning strokes much more effective

Your paddles are special? For what reason exactly?

They are Greenland paddles! It’s a very old style of paddle that is lower impact on joints and is more efficient over long distances, and also really good for rolling. Personally I use them because I find them more enjoyable to use but I often keep a euro on deck as a backup since it’s good to be proficient with them too.

@@brendankayaks OK, I saw you rolling with the paddle, and it looked easier under water fully emerged. But forward strutting I believe is lesser than regulars? Cool.

If I’m understanding correctly: the forward stroke is less powerful than with a euro paddle definitely, and is made up for with a faster cadence, the efficiency is more in your energy output, you’ll be less tired after a long distance with a Greenland than the same distance with a euro. Different types of paddles absolutely bring different advantages and one isn’t always better than another.

So glad you went out in those conditions! that is the best way to learn. I am a big proponent of launching backwards...BUT in conditions like that everyone should be nose to the waves, and the group should work to push people out into the waves, until you have fewer and fewer people launching boats. Until the last person self launches. You will get out past the crashing waves much faster and not have to turn around. You now see the difference between a practice roll, and a combat roll. Excellent video!

Thanks! Getting that unplanned roll was probably the best feeling I had all year, it’s the first time I’ve succeeded at an unplanned roll. Definitely useful to know about launching, it would have made all of our day much easier.
