Man - happened to me to. I worked hard for some bait a couple weeks ago. I ended up with one nice small carp (11"ish) and a bunch of small threadfins. I was exited to use the carp live... then he got ate by a 8 - 10 pound blue cat. I don't know how that cat choked him down... I just knew he'd get a huge flathead ......

I wonder if your large flats seeming preference for cut bait is the fishery? Perhaps the big lazy fish follow the blues and feed on their easy to get scraps. Live bait here is as good or slightly better than good cut bait (like skippies) but there are very few blues where I'm at (never caught one close to the house) just a thought..... Cause our flatheads are not hardly active at all during the day either. Pretty much have to fish in the brush piles to catch one when the sun's out.

Would you do this type of fishing, main channel ledge stuff, in the Mississippi River? Where I’m at in Illinois, main channel ledge sounds like ‘barge channel’. Would you do it here too? Current is pretty steady most times too.

Them damn channel “rats” will do the same thing with a good live bait too, damn little channel cats, I’ve had a lot of channels that’ll just crush a live bait and then spit it out, they can’t stand to something lively! Little bastards! Course I’ve had pretty good sized channels that would eat a little tiny bluegill or green sunfish, I’ve caught quite a few big channels on a little bait, like 3-4 inch bluegills, I’m talking 17,18,19 lb channels.
