Paddling The Strid is bonkers. From what I understand, and from what I've seen from footage, undercurrents aren't really the issue, it seems to be siphons and overhanging rocks that make it deadly. Very easy to be dragged under with the flow of water and not be seen again for months. In kayaking, we tend to look for the risk / reward factor. Essentially, is the risk worth it? do you want to die 'name chasing'?
@ezedjay Жыл бұрын
That was insane. The footage gives a good idea of what a brutal river that is. When that guy fell in at that narrow bit - you know - the bit that's been measured at 65 meters deep..........edge of the seat stuff - I was expecting him to just disappear when he got rolled.

Why does this sport not use full face helmets like motocross helmets? It seems pretty easy to smash your nose/face on underneath rocks with these little helmets.
@maskcollector69493 жыл бұрын
They make some it’s just not common because you have to be half crazy in the first place and most people were taught without helmets, at least where I’m from (Missouri/Arkansas no one wears helmets hardly at all lol). I would still prefer a full face, but we take 12 footers (long boats) and usually don’t flip over unless it’s a total dump. You just had to paddle hard and duck rock faces lol. Undercuts are a bigger threat than anything else so being to swim uninhibited helps, not sure how that would be with a helmet. Life jacket helps, though, a lot of people don’t care to use those either. Skills and luck make up for a lot, I tend to agree on better safety gear being necessary, just depends. I don’t think I’d need more than a basic helmet for what I do, I’m more afraid of rocks I’m passing by around corners that I have to dodge above water. A chinned helmet might make it difficult to swim unless it was designed around it. Life jacket and basic helmet would help in most cases. The biggest missing ingredient I see is the lack of throw ropes. No one hardly knows what it even is here lol.
