I paddled and camped in the swamp in April. Counted nine alligators in four days. It's now my favorite place on Earth. The solitude and natural beauty are awesome. Wilderness camping permits for the platforms and Floyd's Island are surprisingly easy to get. I'd expect to wait years, but a month is enough even in peak season. In the most remote parts of the swamp, where only canoes and kayaks may pass, I didn't see another human soul for days even on the miles of marked trails. I'll be back in the fall.

Wow - that alligator that just sank in front of your kayak... he kind of looked like he was planning something. We have camped at Stephen C Foster State Park twice and were just mesmerized. Kayaking next to alligators seriously gives me the creeps, so I appreciate YOUR trip that much more! And to see the pitcher plants - very cool!

I want to go kayaking one day. I'm a photographer but I love capturing the gators from land. Hiking is my thing. I'm nervous about the water. Thanks for the footage. Great video. ❤️

Hi Erica, I've been paddling around alligators for a while now and I have NEVER had an issue. And kayaks are the ultimate stealthy approach to wildlife! You can quietly paddle or drift up, while walking is loud and takes more body movement, typically frightening wildlife. Hope you give kayaking a shot one day, I think you'll LOVE it!!!
