I love Finland and Finnish people and although Finnish literacy and knowledge of world is at high level but unfortunately their knowledge about true Iran is very limited. Probably had to do a lot with media and we Iranian who are not true Ambassador of Iran to present Iran and it’s rich literature, music and art culture in Scandinavia and in particular Finland . I sincerely hope , there will a time that you will be able to visit Iran and get to know Iranian culture and in particular music and art as it seems your soul resonate well with this culture . I can’t seem to get enough of this performance! I have watched it about 20 times and I will probably watch it 20 more. I couldn’t help noticing that there are four “thumbs down” for this video and I can only conclude that the thumbs-downers are either deaf, or disapprove of the artist for ethnic reasons, not musical ones. I am probably the only person here who has actually heard the late tar virtuoso, Jalil Shahnaz, in concert. That was back in 1969 or ’70, years before the revolution. Shahnaz is the musician to whom this performance is dedicated and I think he would have loved this because he listened with his heart.😀

I am British by passport but I have family from all over the world, I am 1/4 Iranian and recently I have been speaking with my bubba a lot about my heritage and the history of Iran, I think the time on my path to get in touch with my ancestry has come about because recently my little sister has found herself a boyfriend who happens to also be Iranian and he moved to the UK recently, he showed me the world of Setar, Tar and Tambour and it has been a blessing to me. I have been learning the Setar now for a few months and it is absolutely such a special instrument. I feel like I have connected to it in a very special way and I cannot wait to see our relationship grow :) This is such a beautiful piece, a beautiful example of the Setar and the player in harmony with one another... I'm persian and a pharmacist working in community setting, towards the end of my shift I put this on, its the quiet time in the pharmacy and every single person walking in asking me about the music. It immediately puts them under its magic and I proudly say its Daii Kayan a persian artist playing an instrument called seh tar. Great conversation opener and make you proud to be Persian. If I ever could come back to my homeland he will be one of the few artists I will be stalking to at least watch them or shake their hands and tell them how they regularly cured my homesickness.

I am not a Kurd myself but I know a little bit about Kurdish and Persian history and how the Kurdish history, culture, songs, language, and artists, etc. have been stolen from the dominant population in Iran or as you say Persia.

If Nazery, Kamkaran, and Keyhan Kalhor were not in service of Persian music and instead used their talent towards enriching Kurdish music, they would be now executed/exiled or end up in the diaspora. In Southern Kurdistan, the Kurdish music, culture, and language are flourishing, thanks to three decades of their semi-autonomy region. These are Iranian instruments, not Persian. Persian refers to the Persian ethnicity, Iranian is inclusive for all the different nations living in Iran. Kayhan Kalhor (the performer) , for example, is an ethnic Kurd and not a Persian.

From a guitarist's point of view it's just stunning to see what he does with only the index finger and left hand legatos. The instrument's sound is also very rich given its small size and apparent simplicity. Great performance!

Keyhan was in Europe when his parents home in Tehran was bombed and his mum, dad and older brother lost their lives in, one can assume, a horrific way. But being away, one can assume that every time he picked up his musical instrument it reminded him of his family, whom in his early days encouraged him to practice and praised him for his efforts. Bottom line here, what I am guessing, when he plays, he goes through the pain of that loss, and probably ends up having a conversation with his loved ones through his music. In some places one hears a two way conversation as one listens ! May god bless his family's sole and give him strength to cope with his loss. Beautiful music, sublime 👋👋❤

I have been the wonderful beneficiary of a gift of a setar from a person in Iran for whom I care greatly and who wished to bless me with a musical gift. I had no idea of the history and depth of culture related to this instrument. The more I looked the more I found. While at this time, I am only learning very basic tuning and composition, players like Kayhan Kalhor give me levels to reach for that I had no idea the instrument was capable of! What a wonderful talent and artist he is! I read a bit about his early musical life and I now am able to hear the Kurdish influence given to him by his parents. The more you study this music, the more depth you find and the more it draws you in! Through the music, I learn more about the rich history of the region. Deep thanks to Setareh for blessing me with such an instrument that brings so much more than new musical ideas, but influences like Kayhan Kalhor. Beautiful!

این موسیقی آدم رو می بره به یه سفر دور و دراز. سفری به اعماق درون. انگار بهت یاد آوری می‌کنه که تو کیستی. انگار همه مسایل دنیوی بی معنی میشه برات و فقط‌ میخوای خودت رو لابلای این نوا جستجو کنی. انگار استاد و ساز یکی شدن و از هر چی که خوب و بده تو این دنیا حکایت می‌کنن. سخت میشه گفت که با شنیدن این موسیقی شاد میشی یا غمگین، ولی انگار بیشتر «خودت» میشی. At the moment I'm watching a lot of videos about your country to get inspired by it but I already know Persian music well and I like it as much as western classical music and Indian classical music. I have an Iranian friend who came to France and he is an ethnomusicologist and he gave me two books written in Farsi. When I come to Iran I will ask him for a help of my travel but now he lives outside Iran. For me Persian music is spiritual and takes me to another world and I can hardly do without it!
