I gotta disagree that Shiv “gets put in her place because of the twisted societal hierarchy she finds herself in”. She gets put in her place because she’s overconfident and overreaching her play. She is probably the most entitled out of the Roy siblings, and thinks she deserves a seat at the table because she’s helped once or twice in smoothing things over where a female voice is needed. Girl, how does that make you the right one to lead Waystar?? Logan has said it before that she needed to take management courses to prep for the role, and that they’d even fast track her, only for her to be OFFENDED? Jfc, the nepo baby entitlement here is far worse than what’s going on with the other (contending) sibs. Even forever-unserious-Roman has taken the course and one time wore the Doderick costume(!) while Ken has put the years in the company. What has she done? She has never put the work in, and has only “facilitated” behind closed doors. Nothing concrete on paper. TLDR: She’s not put in her place because she is a woman, she’s put in her place because she thinks she smarter than she is and shouldn’t be subjected to any legwork and thinks she deserves the crown just because she wants it. Get in line, sister and do the actual work.

Jesse Armstrong himself has called Tomgreg a 'homoerotic power play', Tom uses Greg as an emotional/psychological proxy for Shiv, and Kieran confirmed in a recent interview that Roman's sexuality has always meant to be ambiguous/queer leaning hence why they got rid of his wife and kid from the pilot, hence why the whole *thing* of him with the personal trainer, Mencken and other men he makes deals with, the frequent jokes about military school, camp, his degradation/submission fetish, Logan sending him away and thinking there's something 'wrong' with him, etc. Even on the less textual end of the scale, Arian Moayed says he gets why people ship Kenstewy, voiced his support for the fans writing fanfiction and has shared fan jokes about gay/bi Stewy, and Tomgreg also gets asked about in interviews frequently to equally positive and enthused responses. If you're that ignorant that you can't see any of that, which is all objectively part of the text both directly and subtextually, then I suggest picking up Barney or something else more on your level.

Great video!! I'll add that the show is so sexual not despite all business talk but partly because of it. Like, all these characters a) are incredibly repressed and b) process and experience everything through the lens of business, and so many of their negotiations and power plays end up having sexual connotations. There's a reason why the most used euphemism for screwing over/defeating someone in the show is "fucking them" and variations of that. It's incredibly interesting to analyze and IMO it makes Succession more erotic than shows filled to the brim with sex scenes but with zero chemistry between the characters.

I love how the show unequivocally shows how horrible these people are, then makes you root for one of them, pulls the rug from under your feel by going "Nuh uh!, they're awful, as we told you!", and then your heart goes to another character, and this all repeats ad nauseam. I love seeing them win, fail, suffer, be cruel, all of it. I could watch these kids for years, as long as they get a vicious tongue lashing from Marcia and Gerri on the regular.

"These are not bad people, they're broken people" I understand your point and agree with what you are trying to say with that, but I'd say I disagree to a degree - I think they are both. I think they are people broken apart by their upbringing and the systems which they were raised in which has ultimately degraded them into, fundamentally, bad people. They are all people desperate for love and validation, but that does not excuse the incredibly shitty things they constantly do. They are bad people, it's just that they're three dimensional enough characters where we see all the cracks that formed them into what they've become and can sympathize and enjoy their story, and even root for them, even if they are just not good people. The fact that they never can or will be good people, largely because of their father, is the tragedy of the show. And the villainization of queer coding in media over the years is part of why queer people gravitate towards villains and enjoy them, which is another part of why I think the show is so beloved by queer audiences!

i haven’t seen many videos really take on this aspect of the show’s impact and its resulting fanbase vs expected audience. i was never quite able to put my finger on how sexually charged so many interactions are, but everyone’s points about how hierarchies of power are challenged and flipped and at times even fluid (albeit within the patriarchal framework) do lend themselves to queer readings that exist outside of a traditional cishet relationship. this was so good!

I wish you'd gone a _smidge_ more into Kenstewy being basically the only thing resembling true friendship and honesty any of the siblings have and Stewy downright knowing Kendall better than himself, trying to get him out repeatedly from the beginning and being one of the few outsiders to see Logan's abuse from a young age and how entrenched in it Ken is and how his brokenness and trauma manifests and shapes his actions and trying to be understanding of that ("there's a friend card here/how did he get at you?"), and also gone more into Logan's homophobic shaming of both Roman and Ken and how he utilizes military school among other things against Roman in an almost conversion therapy-esque fashion, but all in all this was a great and really fun video. Glad to see more people talking about these elements of the show and DEFINITELY excited for that potential Roman video. Subscribed. 👌👌

the second half of s1 (starting with ep 6 i think) and beginning of s2 is when we see kendall actually Taking drugs, but much of s2 and s3 have scenes where he is definitely on them but we just haven’t seen him in the act. idk if you were still wondering about the show but i hope this is helpful!!

I also tend to avoid drug use in TV shows for my own livelihood and Succession definitely has a fair deal. In particular I have an aversion to drugs when they are represented recreationally as it makes me uncomfortable and Succession has a lot of that. I just skip those scenes when I can feel them coming. Luckily the characters are all atrocious human beings so seeing them do that doesnt exactly tarnish an idealised version of them in my head lol. I’d advise to skip the show if you really dont wanna see any of it, or to skip the scenes. You could also look at warnings for the episodes i.e. the platform I watch them on warns me of drug use before the episode starts so you could maybe skip those ones and watch a recap. It’s a shame to skip it because its a superb show but I understand how off-putting the drug use can be ;-;
