You forgot to mention how Season 1 winners never really got the promised "7-episode-arc". They had an arc on the first episode they were in and were basically forgotten for the rest of the show. Sure, Sam did return as a "regular" character, but, again, he was basically furniture. Only Alex, who didn't actually win, got to be an actual character. Glee Project was essentially an unnecessarily complicated audition that already had a part in mind, but called a diverse group of actors anyway in order to make television out of their dreams, only to cast the actor that already fit the part they had in mind, only to treat them as a secondary-class character on the show afterwards.

Yes this is what i always say, especially in season 2. Bcs i will never forget how season 2 basically have the most diverse cast and the sole winner is the straight white men. How can ryan murphy and co went from writing Joe and Rory as furniture to full on Ryder involved in a love triangle with Marley and Jake. Ryder is always have storyline throughout season 4, not like Rory and Joe.

@ScoutScout862 жыл бұрын
My husband has an interesting theory about her elimination...the following week was "sexuality" week...and if they had eliminated Cameron that week (like they should have because he was a DIVA) they would have had an even number of "boys" and "girls"...meaning that Alex would have had to play opposite a female love interest. The show runners took this opportunity to shit on Samuel for not being super comfortable in his role as Alex's love interest but at no point put Alex in a position where they weren't in their comfort zone...at least love interest wise. Now granted, Alex was in the bottom three for that episode but that was also the episode where they performed in drag for the first time. Coincidence? I mean, maybe but it seems too perfect. I think, because Alex already had a character to build off of, the show runners knew where they could take that character and knew they wouldn't have to struggle to give Alex a place in the story...and clearly when Alex came back the following season as a New Direction member, that was proven. Now, I don't begrudge any success Alex has achieved, but the what ifs are deafening...

I just remember the outrage I felt about Emily being eliminated; Charlie taking Mario's cane and just nothing being done about it; and how people seemed to be kicked out when it should be their "week" - like Emily during vulnerability, Tyler during Sexuality, Mario in Adaptability... That didn't age well. And again (minus Alex and Aylin being in the grand finale) how the winners/runners up were all straight white people. Ryan said something once about "when I cast a disabled actor - I don't want their character to just be their disability - I want that to just be the 'last' thing you think of...Like Lauren (potter, aka becky Jackson)" (I am paraphrasing) Like... what? So, I'm kinda thankful that they didn't "exploit" any of the actors that I loved because I think Ryan would have ruined their stories... Like turning Sam into a Teen Jesus, non shoe wearing almost "joke" - when he wasn't the typical 'goody-goody' christian like Cameron was (I really think he was trying to mesh both "characters" together.

Come on we all know why the Irish guy "won" in season 1. He sang a word in his first song in the bottom wrong. Instead of singing "I wish I had Jessie's Girl" he sang "I wish I was Jessie's Girl" and Ryan Murphy liked the implication of being gay and that was the spark that kept him in Ryan's mind. lol well maybe that's a conspiracy but I believe it. Sam was a plain scoop of vanilla ice cream. Sure it's popular but not what I came to Baskin Robbins for lol
@alexeifiore85732 жыл бұрын
honestly, if you watch back season 1 of the GP, you can see why they liked damien. irl, he's charming and sweet but also humble and fairly talented. but the problem with the writers is that they try and make characters from the actors themselves, so they mainly liked the fact that damien was irish, so they made his character's whole arc revolve around that fact. same with samuel larson, he mentioned religion being a big part of his life, so they made his character the religious kid.

I agree with all of this overall except.... Damien was one of the better singers. He was. I'm sorry. Maybe it's because I love those crooner rat pack type voices which Damien pulls off amazing. I also did not get the feeling that Ryan liked him too much either. He gave up a successful singing career in Ireland for this shot and he was barely in the 7 episodes he won and was written to be a pervy stereotype who's only personality traits were horny, lonley and irish. He didn't get an arc. He didn't get a character. Sam got a character. Alex got a character. Even Lindsay who was only in for her two episodes get more of a character. Ultimately Ryan's just not a good writers. That's why he demanded his actors give him that hook.
@musiclover_kb49132 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's fair to say that Ryan's not a good writer, when he tries, he turns out great shit. I think the success of Glee in particular went to his head and gave him a lazier approach to writing, which makes sense because it was the show that officially blew him over the roof and became a huge phenomenon. Personally for me, Nip/Tuck was his strongest show quality wise (even tho it too had its fair share of insanity)
@creatingpulsars99792 жыл бұрын
@@musiclover_kb4913 Personally, I found Nip/Tuck to be terrible tbh. I felt it utilized just a lot of toxic tropes in order to try to seem edgy in the same way Glee used stereotypes to try to seem quirky and none of it was done particularly well but at least the characters and actors in glee were more likeable. Again, in my opinions. Your's is 100% valid and I can see why someone would like it. Ultimately, I do think Ryan Murphy is consistently not a good writer and even if he has some quality work, the "lazier approach to writing" shows that he might no longer be. After 6th Sense and Signs, people thought M Night was going to be a a great director but lets face it.... he's not lol. Consistency is important for me to consider someone great at their job.

i agree with absolutely everything you said, i noticed while watching s1 that sam was doing enough to keep going week after week and never stood out, just stayed consisant until the end where he finally talked to ryan, and he basically confirmed that it was his strategy on his episode of the gleek of the week podcast, like I knew I wasn't imagining it. and damian, he got the most face time with ryan, it totally saved him. i rewatched the show recently and yeah s1 was so wholesome, but I liked the cast of s2 a lot, just not the execution, I could tell they were pushing storylines really hard. and blake makes it so hard to watch I hate it every time he appears.but yeah they were clearly building characters like lily tried to make her a bitch but she wasn't lmao, like she's still friends with a lot of them. and Abraham, I loved him so much, but they kept trying to make him into something he wasn't, putting all these labels on him when he wasn't comfortable with it at all, like I could see it, it was so annoying. even he said something like that on gleek of the week (I have been bingeing episodes lmao) and I'm glad he knows who he is now. and most of all aylin, she was so good and I was rooting for her, but I'm Muslim and the way ryan murphy was talking about her, it irked me so much I was glad she didn't win, bc glee was so big and Muslim rep is already very bad, if they added her to the mix the way ryan wanted it would've been disastrous. and you're right, for glee specifically, ryan really wanted to write to the actor and it showed, and it worked with some but not everyone.he does it less now depending on the project I'm glad that pretty much everyone on that show is doing well now. i love lucas modzelewski's video on it, its very thorough, but you really had the opinions I had

This show was structurally flawed. I agree that damian won bc Ryan was only seeing the people doing poorly. I listened to a podcast that talked about this show episode by episode (recovering gleek!) and they said so much that explains the problem with the glee project.

Why couldn't THAT have been the reason her name is Rachel instead of her dads being Friends fans? 2. The majority of the Barbra songs she sings (except for 2) are from Funny Girl. She should have sung Everything (A Star is Born) in an episode at some point, considering her drive. Also, with all the Finchel breakups, why did she never sing The Way We Were or You Don't Bring Me Flowers (with Finn or even Jessie) or Who Can I Turn To (This would have made more sense than Total Eclipse of The Heart)? ANY ONE OF THOSE! Come on! She's obsessed with Barbra and It's her middle name! There could have been more! I do makeup and edit videos for a Barbra impressionist, okay? That's why I'm ranting.

One thing that pisses me off about Nellie's treatment is that they basically turned it into a story line with the character of Marley. Marley is uncomfortable about dressing in skimpy clothes for an assignment and gets suspended (I think) from the club because of it.
