While yes, Cordelia is the first wife, she wasn’t really interested in wanting kids and just wanted Karl. Because of that, Karl neglected her for awhile and went on to marry Beatrix who soon after gave birth to the two eldest brothers Shuu and Reiji. It wasn’t until after they were born and Beatrix was getting attention from Karl that Cordelia then decided she wanted kids which is why the triplets aren’t the oldest. Also, biologically, Ayato is the youngest and Laito is the oldest but, because they were born at a time in Japan where the youngest was considered the oldest, they switched places.
