Copyright 2016 Kaylee Rogers/Killard House School Kaylee, a student at Killard House Special School in Northern Ireland, who suffers from autism and ADHD; stunned the online world with a choir rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”.
Colin Millar, the school’s principal, told BBC News that Kaylee is often shy - but not when she sings.
“All my kids have talents, as well as barriers, and this is hers.”
“She’d be a very quiet little girl, but when she sings, she just opens up,” he said.
Kaylee started attending Killard House a few years ago, in order to help her address learning delays. She’s overcome some incredible challenges to share that voice with the world and singing has helped her build up her confidence
“For a child who came in and wouldn’t really talk, wouldn’t really read out in class, to stand and perform in front of an audience is amazing. It takes a lot of effort on Kaylee’s part,” Millar said.
“Hallelujah”, written by Leonard Cohen over the course of five years, was recorded by dozens of famous artists. But, Cohen passed away in November 2016, just weeks before Kaylee Rogers’ rendition of his most famous song was released. Somehow, we’re sure that Cohen would approve of this stunning remake.

The school needs all the support and appreciation it can get. They not only came up with Christmas-themed lyrics but captured the real spirit of Christmas. The School not only encouraged Kaylee's unique talent but it included the entire chorus in an uplifting performance. I cannot imagine there was a dry eye in the audience. A story of hope. Congratulations to the teachers and parents.

As a 43-year old father of two little girls and the man who has to live everyday of his life with a learning disability called, "Nonverbal Learning Disorder", or "NVLD", thank you for your generous patience with your daughter. Everyone focuses on the CHILDREN with significant learning hurdles, but once you leave academia it's like, "Whelp! Not MY problem anymore! Good luck out there in life!", and you're not prepared at all for life in the real world. It's not like it goes away once you turn 18! NO! You're stuck with it for the rest of your life! I don't know if your daughter KNOVVS she's ASD or not, but NVLD'ers DO! We KNOW WHAT "NORMAL" IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE AND LIVE A VERY FRUSTRATING LIFE TRYING IN VAIN TO ACHIEVE IT! Having a Wife and two beautiful little girls and a house we were able to finance through my VA lone is about the only thing that makes me feel truly "normal". We ABSOLUTELY need to start young with intervention and preparing children with these challenges to grow into healthy adults who can handle themselves in the real world. I watched a video documentary not long ago, and I'd seen it before, but I watch it again every now and again as a reminder about things and for perspective, but it's a short documentary/Public Service Announcement about women...GROWN WOMEN, with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)and it's fascinating. God Bless you and your daughter! By the way, if she ever gets to feeling down about Autism, let her know that in my youth, there was a bombshell actress who had ASD; her name is Deryl Hannah!

I, for one, cannot get the original lyrics and force of the song out of my head....a sadomasochistic version of David’s sin with Bathsheba. (She tied you to the kitchen chair) And drags from his lips a “hallelujah” from the sexual pleasure of it. Hallelujah means. “Praise the Lord.” Thus David, according to Coen, is not only beginning an unseemly affair, but is also mocking God while doing it. Illicit sex is not an act of worship. She got pregnant, and to hide what he did, David killed her husband. This was a horrible thing he did and would later be personally tortured by the thought of it...he would repent, but would feel awful about it for a long time. The original song glorifies his shame. People like to mindlessly sing Hallelujah without any knowledge of the context. The melody and tune are indeed good, the girl who sings it is sweet, but it’s hard to lift the melody away from the lyrics for many devout Christians.
