As much as I love the Retro DKC games, they never quite scratched the same itch as the Rare DKC games. Which isn't really a complaint. I love that Retro managed to use the same core ingredients but still give their games a distinctive identity. But it still left that itch unscratched. I actually didn't know Kaze was so heavily inspired by DKC before playing it. I blind bought it just because I happened to see its trailer on Reddit right at a moment when I was in the mood for a classic style platformer, and sometimes I randomly buy indie games just to support fellow indies. So as I was playing the first couple levels, I kept going, "Oh hey, that's like in DKC. Oh, that too. Haha, they even have the letters. Hmm, I wonder if you can attack off a ledge and jump out of it in midair? Oh cool, you can! Wait a minute. Is... is this just a DKC game??" Needless to say, it was a pleasant surprise. I've played a lot of retro indie platformers, and this is definitely one of the higher quality ones. I just wish there was more of it, because I beat it 100% in like 5-6 hours. I hope it's a success and the devs get to do a sequel.

Have you played Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair? For me it scratched the itch left by the snes DKC games (unlike the Retro games, which are good in their own way). There's a free demo you should try.

The biggest issue I have with the Retro DKC games, are the way your character feels to control. Between the Dixie and Diddy in DKC2 they nailed the physics of two characters that are unique and fun to control. 👍👍

Don't take this as a negative or anything I just thought people may not realize and wanted to point it out, but that vine falling level which you pointed out couldn't be done in DKC due to the original mechanics is an idea taken from the Rayman Origins/Legends games which also appears to be an inspiration for this game

So it's literally DKC2? Well, not that I'm complaining, DKC2 was a fantastic game (arguably the best) and we've had a lot less DKC clones than we've had, say, Super Metroid, Castlevania, or Zelda clones.

The collectibles purpose is mainly to get you access to art and more details on the games story involving evil vegetables, whoopie. The unlimited lives aspect made it difficult to allow the bonus stages to grant anything else of use. Deaths do not carry much weight, and there is no way to increase the difficulty to make deaths meaningful again. All those combined were the biggest downsides for me. It's still an above average platformer, I just wish there was an additional difficulty option.

No not really. You have very little control of your character in Rocket Rush, you can only move left and right and have to avoid walls with almost perfect timing. This is a much better stage imo

Just got it last night on Switch for less than 5 dollars on a whim. I did look up a quick review and I thought it would just be a nice platformer. I did not expect a DKC-like that handles BEAUTIFULLY!

Aaaaactually, that falling and floating level looks an AWFUL lot like Rocket Rush, the final hidden level of DKC3 where you have to time your floating and descending in a rocket to reach the bottom without exploding. And Kaze and her buddy look exactly like Cream and Cheese, two Sonic the Hedgehog side characters you could play as on easy mode in some remakes. Cream the rabbit could fly by spinning her ears, and Cheese the chao (cute little spirit thingers) gave her an extra hit when out of rings. Different sources, and the game looks super awesome, but it does seem TOTALLY 100% derivative. DKC, Rayman, Sonic the Hedgehog. I wonder what other source they drew their ideas from? Anyways, it does look like a good mix of material! But it's missing my favorite aspect of DKC, the dual kongs. The entire reason my sister and I preferred it over Mario is because we could switch players (And Kongs!) in the middle of any level.

You’ve got to cover Invisigun reloaded, it’s a multiplayer pvp shooter when everyone including you is invisible. Shooting reveals yourself to you and your opponents. The problem is that the game flopped, nobody knows about it and it’s a shame! Please cover it because then more people could play it!

Thus far my favourite DKC experience after the original trilogy has been Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair. It feels more DKC-esque than the actual new dkc games by nintendo.

There is something about the physics and the visuals that looks a little cheap to me. The tiles that make up the level kind of seem completely disjointed from the background, everything is so blocky and falt, kind of reminds me of old flash games. It looks cool but I think 30 dollars is a little too expensive for these type of game. I will be waiting for a nice sale.

You convinced me immediately once I saw it. I had never even heard of this game and can't believe something this polished went under the radar. I was a little shocked at the price, but after seeing it here felt it is justified for something this solid. I caved and had to get it for myself (being a fan of platformers and of course Donkey Kong Country as well) and test the waters. I am really looking forward to trying it out. In fact, just after watching the video, I went on to check if the game will get a physical release - and indeed, it will. In just one month, in fact.
