This was the opening piece of the legendary concert which included the Pictures at an Exhibition in its program. Although the recording is poor, the performance is phenomenal from the very first chord. No one plays it so powerfully. This rendition posed such a daring challenge to the orthodoxy that the audience is reported to have started an emotional debate right after this first piece.

Yes there was an emotional debate after the concert, I can testify to that because I was there and I was one of those people debating

@@RodrigoMunozCarrasco There was a big applause after the piece. Did the audience stand? Very unusual if they did. Applause is generally given after the first half and end of the concert and ,of course, after every encore.

@@reynaldo121 You know it was so long ago that I don't remember if that's the case (it could be) I do know that there was raucous applause and a long standing ovation and we asked for 2 or 3 encores at the end of the concert, and yes after the concert there was a divided audience, I loved it myself btw

@@RodrigoMunozCarrasco I read Matanya Ophee's glowing review of the 1984 concert a while ago and watched the entire recorded video of the concert and encores. It must have been a special concert. Here's a link to Mantanya's writing about Yamashita and the concert. translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=guitarra.artepulsado.com/guitarra/cronicas_yamashita.htm&prev=search&pto=aue
I was witness to Maestro Yamashita's performance at Royce Hall/UCLA in the late 1980s. He will remain the most expressive guitarist!!

His connection to the melody is masterful. He is exciting and entertaining, but always makes it about the music, never about him. He is a true Maestro!

This is just brilliant. I wish I could play this in competitions with such ferocity, passion, and energy

I love it! While this piece is almost always played like a showpiece, Yamashita just takes it to the extreme. While it is very fast in some places, it is also very musical. A lot of contrast between the slow and fast movements, beautiful and metallic sounds and loud/soft. Of course it is not at all required to play this piece this fast, but in the end this is a piece that asks for showing of in my opinion.

It's not arrangement. Sor composed it for guitar originally. This Theme is from Mozart Opera "Die Zauberflöte"

How I would love to have such energy! The man must be in a continuous arousal playing this piece. Aside from a musical point of view (romantic interpretation of a non-romantic piece -- much like Segovia's rendition by the way) it is a very interesting way to play it...

2nd movement of 2nd variation, where you get the finger muscle cramps. Is it only me or anyone else? (Not talking about the speed of Yamashita, but just regular player speed)

this is arranged by sor, not yamashita. its called variations on a theme of mozart.

It is indeed very fast, but to be honest I am not sure I like it. The best version I've ever heard was performed by Parkening, which is with slower speed but very beautiful.

at first I thought, "what? this is not "The Magic Flute"! but yes, it is Fernando Sor's "variations on a theme" from said Singspiel... it is the little song that the slaves sing when Papageno plays his bells near the end of act one. "Das klinget so herrlich, das klinget so schön, la ra la la la la... nie hab ich so etwas," etc... something like that; please forgive my bad German spelling.

There was a lot of music in his playing. A lot of prominent classical guitarists were in attendance at this guitar festival in Canada (David Russell one of them) and this was the first piece in a very demanding program by Yamashita. By the way, he got an unprecedented roar of approval and a standing ovation for just the first piece!!!
