That our waking reality is a cage of sorts keeping us separated from an even greater realm with meaning beyond comprehension.

It's a nice theory, but personally I think that his adult manifestation is detached of any emotions at all. His love for his "mother" is rooted in his child form, which in the sacrament ending seem pretty content. It's sort of a form of DID where his adult-self is hollow and only serves as a tool to finish the ritual. Where his child form is the pure and innocent form, that contains his hopes and dreams.

Probably worse than "nothing happening" - he performed the ritual thinking he'd be reunited with his mother, instead all he accomplished is awakening the order's god and spreading the corruption of Silent Hill to other places (going by the news report in the worst ending) - so perhaps he's going through a regretful realization on top of the dissatisfaction . He was basically just used as a back-up plan by Dahlia Gillespie.

One thing that's noticed, from the beginning of the game, when the protagonist is looking around his room, is that the pictures he sees on the walls, that he took of Silent Hill, explain something that has confused players left and right with one question... Why would anyone go there, in any of the games, such as the people in the second remembering it as their favorite vacation spot? When he sees the pictures, and describes what he felt when there, it is discovered that when Silent Hill isn't actively trying to draw people in, he describes it as a peaceful, quaint, picturesque village, with fairly quiet inhabitants. It is at this point that, knowing what the players know of the place, it becomes obvious that Silent Hill most likely has some form of glamour over it, blocking out even the subconscious warning signs one might feel, even if seeing nothing wrong... All they detect is a sense of the ordinary, a solitary place of peace and beauty... essentially, Silent Hill is a pitcher plant, drawing in prey, and when it catches a prey with a taste it likes, that is when it strikes, enclosing around them, and revealing it's true nature, and they either escape, or are consumed by it.

Valid point. There are definitely certain aspects that could've been better.
@nikobowling1606 Жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. I think the second half of the game is the best and the scariest. Because it makes everything more stressful to deal with Walter chasing you, having to deal with the other monsters and looking after Eileen. What's more, the game contains several hidden weapons and items that make it easier to kill the monsters. I've finished this game several times, and I can tell you that the more you get to know the game beyond the surface, the easier it gets. A tip: if you want to explore the scenarios without Eileen around, just run fast enough so that she doesn't follow you to the next area (that's why the developers made her walk slower than the pratagonist) so that you can solve the puzzles more easily without anything getting in your way. As I mentioned before, there are items hidden throughout the game that will make it easier for you to play, both in Henry's house and in the other world.

The cruelest, most mean spirited, most disturbing of the Silent Hill games. Heavily flawed, and frustrating at times, with the second half being the longest escort mission to date, but it's also an unforgettable descending journey into madness, desperation, depravity, and misery that gives only just enough breathing room to let horror sink in and scares linger. It's also helped by this strange vibe that gives it a slight "analog horror" feel, whether it be in cutscenes or gameplay, sometimes making things feel more real than they actually are.

0:36 Have to correct you there, chief. Silent Hill 4 was NOT the first in the series to take place outside of Silent Hill. After the events of Silent Hill, Harry Mason moved to the town of Portland, Maine, and raised Heather there in order to hide from the cult. The entire first 2/3 of the game takes place in Portland, from the mall all the way up to when Heather gets back to her apartment. Once you beat the apartment rooftop boss, Heather and Douglas travel to Silent Hill together and you finish the rest of the game there. Additionally, Silent Hill 4 did not take place exclusively outside of Silent Hill. Two of the areas players explore in the game, the Wish House orphanage and the water prison, are located in Silent Hill. The orphanage is right on the edge of Toluca Lake, and the water prison is located in the middle of the lake. The rest of the game areas are in and around Henry's apartment building in the town of South Ashfield. So as you can see, both Silent Hill 3 and 4 had parts that were in Silent Hill, and parts that were outside of Silent Hill. But obviously Silent Hill 3 did it first.

Wake up babe, a new Silent Hill video just dropped! Thank you for making a video on one of my favorite games of all time. It's partly because of nostalgia from childhood and it being my first Silent Hill game I finished, but I find the concept so interesting and personal, being involuntarily stuck inside your home which is supposed to be a safe space. Nowadays after playing nearly all the Silent Hill games, a lot of them multiple times, The Room has been dethroned by the classic Silent Hill 2 and it's symbolisms, but I will never forget about this game and it has been living in my head rent-free for as long as it has been since I played it for the first time..

A great video, I love Silent Hill 4 The Room, probably my favourite SH game! But I would like to point out that it is known that Walter died by stabbing himself in the neck with a metal soup spoon and severing his own carotid artery while in prison (his death was also part of the Ritual)... it's mentioned in the Murder Incident Article found outside Wood Side Apartments in a garbage chute in Silent Hill 2 (after we solve the "canned juice puzzle"....
@KazzaGamesTV Жыл бұрын
I agree with you. But I didn't want to mention that detail for two reasons. Number one is because discussing that subject in the video is not a good idea because you know how the rules work in 2023. Number 2 is the fact that even though that theory is suggested, the game is actually designed to keep that part of the plot ambiguous and open for speculation. That's why there are theories that suggest that there might be a third party involved in Walter's death. Even the journalist Joseph Schreiber, who was involved in Walter's case, used to believe that the man in the cell wasn't the real Walter Sullivan in the first place. Silent Hill story designers are known for creating these deceptions to keep players curious.

@magicalmidgethorse4730 Жыл бұрын
I think Henry's reaction is rather organic. Is like a fever dream. At the beginning he's mostly confused rather than scared. Later on he's so shocked by what he's witnessed he can't react like people would expect. He's most likely so scared he can't scream out of fear. Sounds weird, but it does happen to some people. He also has to put up a calm face when he meets boy Walter because as an adult he's supposed to reassure safety to a stray child.
@Mia19960311 ай бұрын
@@magicalmidgethorse4730 agreed. People in shock are actually quite likely to become laser focused on problem solving, disturbingly logical, emotionally detached, almost to the point of becoming a completely different person, unrecognizable. It's a self-preservation mechanism. It's not without cause that one of the possible symptoms of PTSD is dissociation. Hysteria and dramatics are good for entertainment in media, but chances are that in an actual life or death situation you would be calm and collected as long as there's something for you to focus your energy on instead of idly awaiting your demise. Afterwards, if flashbacks occur without any real danger, you might become emotionally volatile because there's nothing to actually react to.

VERY VERY well made video! Explained SH4 very well, it just DOESN'T get enough credits. It's my first ever SH i ever played, it has a special place in my heart. TYSM.

There's a shocking amount of info and backstory to this entry in the SH franchise, and while it plays a little differently to previous entries, its story is the one I think back on the most. I replayed it several years after my initial playthrough. The first time I played it, the internet was a luxury I couldn't afford. However, during my second playthrough, I was fortunate to have access, and I wanted to look up other ways of stopping the ghost-type enemies. I ended up pouring through hours' worth of articles - Walter's lore, that of the other characters, the history of the Order and South Ashfield, and all the murders committed by Walter. It is an emotional story, perhaps more mature in its content than previous Silent Hills'. Well, in my opinion anyway 😀

This game gave me panic attacks... that claustrophobic hole, those mushrooms, the repetitive levels.

Silent Hill 2 talks about Walter. He died in prison I think by making a shiv out of a spoon. It's been a while since I played SH2 but the file was in a garbage chute after you threw down some juice cans to unclog it's chute.

I just completed the game 2 days ago for the first time, my thoughts: Negatives: -I hated the unkilleable ghosts, they were scary but the whole game I was more annoyed by them more than scared. -The second half of the game has recycled worlds with "puzzles" that artifically stretch the duration of the game -too much backtracking to the room, I like backtracking in games and inventory managment, but this was just too much and tedious Positives: -good story and how it unfolds -a lot of characters, I like them, specially Henry, Eileen and Walter -amazing concept for a game and for a horror story in general -enemy designs looks scary and the hauntings in the room are super bizarre and amazing -I liked the charge attack mechanic Resume: bad structure of the gameplay, but amazing story, concept and visuals.

Yeah agreed. It's more fun for me to watch videos about the game than play it. After playing 3 my standards were set too high. But still love the story and music but the gameplay was frustrating

This game didn't get the credit it deserved back in the day. I'm happy to see people have come together to celebrate it in the years after and recent years. Only Silent Hill 1 and this game scared me so much I had to force myself to be brave and continue playing sometimes (in the middle of the night). 1, 2, 3, and 4: The Room... invaluable pieces of the genre and media.

Dude the video was amazing!!! Sh4 in my opinion is very underrated not sure where I would rank but between 2 and 3. I’d suggest you to make this a series where yo do the other silent hills ( especially shattered, 2 and 3) Maybe even do other horror games like Haunting ground, Obsecure etc would be awesome to watch. Not sure if you ever wanted to make a ranking of all the silent hills explaining why too it would be a cool video as well. Keep it up champ! 🥇

Beat this game a couple of times and obtained all 4 endings when I was still a teen playing on xbox. Remembered after starting the second half of the game, some parts were too scary that I had to put the controller down for a few days before continuing. BTW a very in-depth analysis of the game, and all its symbolism and easter eggs can be found on gamefaq e.g. all Walter victims became the ghosts you encounter, 11 random, Billy and Miriam became the twin heads instead of ghosts, Joseph's ghost is stuck in the room, Cynthia, Jasper, Andrew and Richard became boss ghosts, and Walter as himself.

Even in these days I personally still belive that the Twin Monsters from SH4 still remains the scariest design for any video game monster, the water prison and apartament worlds are definitely the best and scariest parts of the game. The Vibe and Atmosphere of SH4 are very unique and incredible especially for that specific period of time, In my opinion SH4 it's still a Masterpiece Obscure Horror game, especially from the old but gold Era of PS2. ☯️👌✌️

such a nice video! But! I want to make some notes about Wallters death. He his actions and a bit of back story was mentioned in silent hill 2 notes And there was said what he commited suicide with a spoon right in the carotid artery /the note/ The police announced today that Walter Sullivan, who was arrested on the 18th of this month for the brutal murder of Billy Locane and his sister Miriam, committed suicide in his jail cell early on the morning of the 22nd. According to the police statement, Sullivan used a soup spoon to stab himself in the neck, severing his carotid artery. By the time the guard discovered him, Sullivan was dead from blood loss, the spoon buried two inches in his neck. An old schoolmate of Walter Sullivan’s from his hometown of Pleasant River said “He didn’t look like the type of guy who would kill kids. But I do remember that just before they arrested him he was blurting out all sorts of strange stuff like ‘He’s trying to kill me. He’s trying to punish me. The monster… the red devil. Forgive me. I did it, but it wasn’t me!’.” The schoolmate then added “I guess now that I think of it, he was kinda crazy.”

The apartment is your only safe place. Nobody can see or hear or help you. But at least you're safe in your apartment. Oh wait. Now it's not. Between the room, the window, the phone, and the peephole in the door, there's plenty of ways the game makes you feel so cut off that going through the hole doesn't seem so bad. I loved the first three SH games, but this one, yeah. Disturbing
