The story of Guru Nanak Dev Ji meeting Pir Dastgir is about understanding and respect. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, known for his divine poetry, attracted both lovers and haters. Some people loved his singing, while others threw stones at him because they didn't understand or agree with his words. But Guru Nanak kept singing, his songs slowly winning over many who first resisted.
Pir Dastgir, a high priest, heard about Guru Nanak and asked him to come to his house. He wanted to know more about Guru Nanak’s inspiration. When they met, Pir Dastgir, sitting on his throne, questioned Guru Nanak about his music and why he sang on what Pir considered sacred land. According to Islamic laws at the time, music was often seen as something that could lead to physical pleasure and distraction.
Guru Nanak explained that music could do more than that. It can touch hearts and lift spirits, helping people connect with the spiritual. He described God as the ultimate musician, whose creation was like a divine symphony where everything from plants to animals to the elements of nature played a part. He suggested that music that praises God could help align the human soul with the divine, turning simple joy into spiritual enlightenment.
Pir Dastgir was moved by Guru Nanak’s words and asked him three deep questions about God: Who created God? Where does God live? What does God do? These were questions that troubled Pir Dastgir deeply.
Guru Nanak responded with wisdom and patience. When Pir Dastgir tried to count jewels as a metaphor, Guru Nanak taught him that everything starts from "One", meaning God is the beginning of everything. He used a pot of milk to explain that just as butter is hidden in milk, God is present in everyone and everything. This helped Pir understand that God is everywhere and in everyone.
Finally, when Pir Dastgir asked what God does, Guru Nanak told him that God elevates the humble and humbles the elevated. He advised Pir Dastgir to step down from his throne and learn from a lower position, symbolizing humility and openness to divine wisdom.
In the end, Pir Dastgir was deeply touched by Guru Nanak's teachings. He offered his throne to Guru Nanak, recognizing him as a true spiritual teacher. The place where this happened was later named "Amar Singhasan" or the eternal throne, honoring Guru Nanak as a blessed messenger of God. This story reminds us of the power of humility, understanding, and the deep spiritual connections that can bridge divides between different beliefs and traditions.
