@@tian-tian96 I'm sorry, I can't really name it... but for a start I say look into what chest and head voice are. There are some confusing videos out there but as long as you get the basics you should be fine from there. Once you know what chest and head voice are, remember that mix voice is just the transition between them. When people "go seemlessly from chest voice to head voice" that's because basically their "mix voice" sounds very good. Roughly speaking chest means that when you sing it feels like you create the sound somewhere in your chest, and head means it feels like you create it somewhere in your head. For me personally, I noticed my throat feels very open when I sing in chest, so I remembered that feeling. That is a great trick - when you are successfull at some sound that you like - *remember the feeling!* That way you can "find" it again and do it again, and build up from there. That's called progress. :D Also, remember that in pop singing there isn't really "right" and "wrong" singing, the important thing is to not sing in a way that hurts your voice. Again, there are a lot of confusing videos out there... my advice is just be careful and if singing a certain way hurts then change it. I've noticed there is "good hurt" and "bad hurt" so be very carefull not to hurt your voice thinking it's a "good hurt" but it was a "bad hurt". Does this make sense? Practise being aware of how you physically feel when you sing and you'll learn to notice when singing a certain way is bad, that's what I think. (That's what I've done and I've never had problems with hurting my voice, but some people say they're very thankfull they had a vocal coach because their coach taught them how to sing without hurting their voice. You may want to consider a vocal coach for that reason, and you could also show them this video and tell them you want to sing like Jae sings here, and they could guide you.) Ok so, there is chest, head and mix voice, there is also how much air you put into your singing. Some singers are very breathy, like Jungkook, and some put as little breath as possible, it depends on what you want to achieve. Jae here is relatively breathy, also as far as I can tell he is using chest voice. So, chest voice and breathy. Another important point is placing. A vocal coach or someome who's studied the anatomy of the throat and vocal cords would know much better how to teach you placing, but from an amateur like me, this is my take on it: placing is basically where the sound that you create hits inside your mouth cavity, or where you direct it so to say. When you make a sound it's like you direct it to some part of your mouth space/cavity. The basics imo are forward vs back and up vs down, and you can experiment from there. As for Jae here, this to me feels middle and down. The chorus of Ariana Grande's No Tears Left To Cry is up and very back. If you go very front it'll be very breathy. Up vs down and back vs front are only very rough guides just to start you off aquiring a feel for placement. Don't get too hung up on up vs down and back vs front because it'll get confusing. The important part is that you start feeling your mouth cavity and how you can direct sound differently in there, this is a learning process. And also to start _hearing_ what other people are doing. Just try hearing where Jae places the sound in his mouth and then try mimicing that. Our brains do some type of magic when we try that. However it's still a learning process, so you have to keep trying. My advice is practise trying to hear the placement of different singers and practise trying to mimic them, so that you develop a feel for it. Something that I personally do is I kind of often hear shapes? E.g. Jae often sings in a very round way (to my ears) so I try singing round too lol. It's kind of like placing but instead of where you direct the sound it's like through what shape you make the sound go out. With Jae and my favorite sound from Jae it's like there is a mental circle in his mouth and the sound goes through that circle and is thus round. Lmao this is very much NOT scientific in any way, it's just what I imagine, and somehow it helps me sound closer to him. Magic, I tell ya. Go listen to Day6's cover of Yesterday. Jae sings very round there lol. Infact one part of that cover, right before Jae starts the chorus and goes up singing "yester-deh eh eh EH EHHH EEE AAAYYY" - that right there is the first time I figured out his singing is "round" and that is my go to phrase to when I want to get into my Jae voice. Lmao... Now enough with the fantasies and pseudo-science lol and back to reality. There is also yelling. Yelling is actually good for singing lol! Practise trying to here if singers are yelling a little bit as they sing. I really love when Jae exploits yelling in his singing, it sounds very good. A good example is Day6's song I Like You. There is also how nasal a person sings. That is basically just how much of the air goes through the nose vs the mouth. There are also other things which seem to not be widely discussed among the singing community, so there isn't at all any set termonology on them. One technique I like and should be semi-known under that name is belly ache. Sing and suddenly imagine your belly is aching, but you keep singing. The sound changes, you just "put some belly ache into it". In this clip I hear some belly ache from Jae, this is why I wanted to include that one. So, to recap: Jae sings in chest voice, relatively breathy but not too breathy, his placing is somewhere in the middle of the mouth, and he's got some belly ache. Also he does some type of Jae magic where it sounds very "round" to me whatever that means but yeah lmao... Also, he does not actually use yelling in his part, except for exactly two separate syllables towards the end of his part, but I don't speak Korean so idk how to tell you which syllables they are. 😅 Ik this is super long but I hope it's helpfull! I learned a lot from two youtube channels but sadly one got deleted and the other, Tristan Peredes, deleted a lot of his earlier videos, from which I learned a lot. But if you watch his reactions to singers he does talk about stuff loke how breathy the singer is or if they have belly ache, so you can still learn. I hope this is helpfull! And if you're a beginner then remember to just keep trying. The vast majority of beginners sound awkward for a long time but if you keep at it eventually you'll love your voice and you'll be addicted to singing. 😊 When you practise you're training your vocal chords and also other muscles surroinding them! So it can take some time until you've trained your muscles. You're also training your hearing and your feeling of your own mouth and muscles. That is also a process but it's nothing scary, don't be discouraged! I wish you all the best and I hope this was helpfull info! ❤
