for those saying they should adapt Korean culture. people can't just be expected to forget their cultures and traditions. They're full grown adults who were raised in Liberia, it's apart of their identity and forever will be. it's very understandable to want to pass this to their children, they shouldn't forget where their roots are, if they choose to pursue further when they grow its up to them. they should be familiar with korean culture yes, for theirs and the kids benefit but that doesn't mean forsake your own. it's called integration.

I totally agree. This reminds me too much of when my family had to move to the UK after the volcanic crisis on a small island in the Caribbean called Montserrat. Martha's experience mirrors that of my mum so much it almost hurts to watch at times. Just like Martha, my mum had small children: me aged 5 at the time and my brother only a few months old. My dad was literally the 3rd child expecting food to be cooked, not have to really do a lot to take care of us or have to do any house work. It angers me that even in a hard situation like this the husband still think she should be doing all the house work and child rearing. EVEN WHEN SHE IS TAKING MEDICATION FOR HER SOUR LEGS!!!! UGH!

In Africa, it is not considered being a maid to take care of your younger siblings. It may be tiring sometimes but it's also a good experience. We have different views about that and so it's easier for us. Just like how they think having children ruins their shape and it's hard it's different over here. We see the joy of it. Children are a blessing. Most African women don't lament on the pains of childbirth,once they see their baby,they're filled with joy that overcomes that. And this is why you can hardly find an African woman depressed because of child birth or raising children.
@sikalove45607 жыл бұрын
This made me so emotional. I think its easy to judge the parents if you did not grow up in this culture. I recall times where as a 9yr old I had to cook for my family of 6. It didn't feel like I was being mistreated, it was just the culture. I am the oldest daughter so it is my responsibility. Our African parents raise us the best they could in a country that was not their own so we can have a better life than they did. That is why they always push us so hard; it is because they love us.

I think Fate will have a very similar experience to many kids who grew up in a country different than their parents. My parents immigrated when they were in their early 20s so they sort of assimilated into American culture since they spent most of their 20s in the US before raising kids, but there definitely were parts where the immediate culture around me, and the culture that my parents grew up in conflicted. It's hard navigating this. Really hard. You want to respect your parent's culture, but you also want to experience the culture your friends and classmates all live. I sure hope Fate and the other girls are getting through it well.

As an African let me clear up the misconception this video has made about us, first of all there are 54 countries in Africa and we all have different cultures, when she says “we do/don’t do this in Africa” she means Liberia, I’m not from Liberia so I wouldn’t know. But I’m Nigeria where I’m from we are allowed to visit friends houses without any age restrictions if it’s in the same neighbourhood but if it’s not tell your parents so they know. The thing about doing male and female assigned roles it’s still a thing for the older generations cos they are quite conservative; for the younger generations the roles are starting to change but not rapidly, hopefully in the coming years it will be different. And chores most people don’t doing laundry with their hands until they are like 14, where I’m from, I’m not sure about other countries in Africa. Kids are given lighter chores to do but we all have to do chores so we aren’t lazy.

Honestly, i've washed the plates since very young and sometimes sweeped the floor and washed the clothes but it was never this harsh. My mom was very understanding and my mom never really teached us gender traditional roles...more like stuffs so we could be able to handle ourselves on our own. Both my parents are cameroonian and i know my cousins are brought up the same way so it's not that my parents are especially kind. We did have age and hour restrictions for going out but i know it's not an african thing because my neighbors and my cousins didn't. My parents were just extremely focused on our education and it was the main focus of my childhood, which did pay off since i skipped two classes, speak two languages fluently and midly understand 2 others, and school is never really hard for me. This was so stereotyped tbh, this is just an african family under rough circumstances, a lot aren't like them.

I think parents are different and for some things the parents did in the show, my parents have done others things, they haven't. Like not being able to go to a friend's house. I wasn't able to hang out with my friends outside of school in any way (unless it was strictly for a school project) even till now. But the thing with laundry and house chores, they waited to teach and make me do house chores till I like 10-11 years old. Even at that, they didn't make the work load heavy because they knew I still had school work and school in general to worry about.

18:00 i felt that. as an african female, i always get so frustrated because i’m expected to do so much more than any male does. my dad can’t wash his own plates or else the world is over. at my little brothers age, i was doing so much more, and when me and my older sister decided to ask my mum she said ‘they’re boys, they’re different’. I wake up at around 5 for school, and get home after 5, if i’m washing the plates for all 6 of my family members, and cleaning the house, when do i do my homework and chill. I can’t change my parents, or their mindsets, so it’s up to my generation and the future ones to educate our children, and not have such double standards!

i don't like how they always say that " in africa we do this all the time, we handle things that way in africa, the man doesnt help in the house and so and so" What i am trying to say is that they always overgenerelize things and it kind of annoys me. People believe in such things if you tell them in that one sided way and they may think that every african handles things like them...But anyways great family!

The generalization thing annoys me, too. I have an African friend that always does this. So after watching this show, I'm starting to think that maybe people from Africa tend to use that line often when explaining why they do things the way they do to non-Africans. :/
@SmileRainbow124 жыл бұрын
Oooh exactly, in fact I hate it when ANY lazy deadbeat husband tells people OUTSIDE his ethnic group that "we all do this in my culture." It's such a cop-out excuse and disrespects their entire ethnic group just because the man can't get his life together. He would never dare say "in Africa we handle household labor like this" to an actually hardworking African husband and father because he knows they'd LAUGH in his slacker face...so he has to lie to Koreans about how patriarchal African families are and hope they believe his excuse due to prejudiced views toward black people. Makes me mad and I'm not even African.

Love this show glad they finally posted an episode. Wish this family the best especially, the husband. How devastating it must be for him to have his immediate family whipped out because of another man's political greed for power. As a matter of fact my heart hurts for the families who haven't been able to flee this tragic situation. When you hear stories like this you have to grateful for the things you have.

This episode caused me to become *so* frustrated with the parents! Treating the eldest daughter Faith (not Fate) like a babysitter, maid (kids can do chores, but not as much as that!), restricting access to visit friend's homes and then expecting her to cope with schoolwork is insane beyond all belief! Why does someone need a teacher to tell them its affecting their daughter, when it should be abundantly clear to any sane person that that is abusive behaviour? It should be common sense that having the girls' hair neatly cornrowed etc would save them time in the mornings and protect their hair from damage from all that straitening and terribly done weave-ons? Thankfully, the parents have started learning Korean, but what were they doing in the past - just reproducing? I hope that baby is their last, as they can't afford nor cope with any more kids, forget about the large families being the norm back home. As the kids learn more Korean, as long as they still can speak pidgin, they should be able to communicate to a degree. The husband, for being as unhelpful at home as he is, seems completely absent minded, which could be due to torture or something else. The Liberian English translations in the English subtitles aren't always accurate, but again, their accents aren't always the clearest to decipher. Liberia is in *West Africa* and the first woman's hair she was braiding was relaxed hair, not 'short and curly', which denotes natural, afro-textured hair.

Pray for her mother and Fate. We should all do that. That little girl and her mother Martha have too many responsibilities. Pray that Jerome becomes more self aware amd does his responsibilities. I was laughing and smiling g when the Korean host told Jerome his beliefs are that of his Korean grandfather from 50 years ago and that he should really do chores.
@nalad93878 жыл бұрын
Agreed. That girl is 9 years old with way too much burden on her shoulders. Let her be a kid. I don't have an issue with Martha if she's learned from her mistakes. She was raised in that kind of culture, so sometimes it takes an outsider telling you you are hurting your child's well-being for you to open your eyes. She's 9 so its not too late to change. And the hair OMG. Is going natural or doing a protective hair style worse than going around with your hair flying straight up??? I don't get that at all. How're you a hairstylist but you have your kid walking around with busted hair all for the sake of conforming to eurocentric beauty. Its one thing if it looked nice, but she looked wild 80% of the time.
@sunnygirly2k48 жыл бұрын
Nala D Agreed, wholeheartedly! jellybeanz She needs more than just prayer, she needs an intervention.

you guys i see what you are trying to say but in an African home being that she is the first child and also a girl she has to do a lot of chores. they call it "training" i guess. usually the first born takes care of the younger siblings and watch over the house; that's how African parents are raised and how they also raise their children. Honestly i don't see it as abuse it is what they believe in. But in all honesty their mentality is messed up
@nalad93878 жыл бұрын
Debby Banks I get that its their culture, but its gotten to a point where its effecting her homework and education. If she plans on living in korea learning the language and becoming educated will help her way more than doing chores her tiny body probably can't handle. I think there's a way to compromise, and I do think its valid to say that we live in a different world nowadays that call for certain behaviors to die down. edit: From my end atleast its less about judging the culture more about concern for the girl
