I'm a career civilian, but I'm an aviation fan and at my job in San Bernardino I worked with or supervised a number of USAF reservists. USAFR at March AFB used to have an annual "bosses day" in which reservists were encouraged to invited their employers, etc to the base for various events. As a result I was able to go up first in a KC-135, and then a few years later in a KC-10. Both were interesting flights. The 135 headed out from March, intending to do some refueling loops over New Mexico. My co-worker was the plane's navigator. But the plane had just come back from depot service (regular USAF, not reserve) and it turned out that the boom had a hydraulic leak. (Much grief from the reservists to the regulars.) As a result the refueling mission was aborted. We were out over Arizona when the problem was discovered, so we turned around. To avoid the trip being a complete bust, the pilot flew at low altitude (est. 5K fet agl) over the Grand Canyon. I spent almost that entire period laying flat in the boomer's position. What an amazing view! Nobody else on the plane even bothered to visit the boomer's station, so after a while I went back forward, rounded up the couple of kids on the plane, and sheparded them to the back to enjoy the view. We were all entranced. The KC-10 trip was also fascinating. On that flight we were paired up with another KC-10, and the planes took turns "passing gas" to each other. When we were on the receiving end, I was able to sit in the cockpit jumpseat to watch the process. When we were delivering gas, I sat with the boomer in back. What a difference from the 135! The back of the plane retracted, rather like the top of a C-130 ramp, revealing a huge picture window. The boomer sat in what looked like an easy chair, with, if I recall correctly, joystick controls on the armrests. A huge advancement from laying flat on a plywood board in the 135. It is amazing how close the two planes get to each other to refuel. That boom is not nearly as long as it looks in the videos. I was heart broken when the USAFR discontinued the "bosses day" events. There were some more planes I wanted to go up in!

jaybee. i was a KC-10 Boom at March from 1986-1994. i retired in 1999 out of Travis. 79-1979 was the second Gucci Bird i flew on. JC Whitney's 84-0185's "B.T. Express" was the first. You had a good aircraft. The crew chiefs made the aircraft and all of the names down to the third-wipe deserved to be on it. Thank you for maintaining them.

@@MrGoodnplenty1957 after all these years its amazing what we can remember and what we forget. I remember you! Just prior to Southern Watch we were one of the last flights to Zaragoza AB then on to Bahrain. That was a good trip, with a good crew. Some crews stand out for various reasons and we never get a chance when the trip was done to thank the good ones. It was nice to get a crew who recognized our efforts to keep a tight ship and did what they could to help keep it that way. We even bought supplies with our own money to keep the Asian Flew lookin good! So thank you for helping to take care of her. And not breaking her lol.

Guess who was the Chief Loadmaster at Southern at the time? Tom Killian with the 79th reserve squadron. small world. It's always good to see folks who was with the 10's when they were blue and white.
