A fairer test would be to place each detector in the bag alone and see how long it takes to respond to the CO. By placing all three in the bag at the same time, you're spraying the CO Expert first, so it could have just gone off first because the CO hadn't propagated through the bag to the other 2 yet. Could you re-do this video showing what happens if you do all three independently?
@Keshaire9 жыл бұрын
Sam McClive Actually no. If you are in a house your alarm won't get sprayed with pure carbon monoxide before anything else. Just because you want to be cheap doesn't mean physics are non-existent.

Two problems with your test: The bag was pressed on top of the openings on the detectors which blocked airflow into the sensor. You need to have space between the bag and the outside of the detector. Second problem is that CO does not mix easily in air - its kinda like thick soup -- so it takes time to migrate from the corner of the bag to the other end. One additional point is that the time to alert is proportional to the concentration (ppm). It's not supposed to alert as quickly when there is a lower level detected - this is so that you don't get false alarms. You wouldn't want the detector going off every time the oven is turned on would you? So being more sensitive is not always desirable. In fact, false alarms lead to people disabling alarms which leads to not getting alerted for a real emergency. Don't underestimate the danger of false alarms.

The first alerts are not broken. A CO detector only goes off immediately if it reaches its peak level. Otherwise, it will wait a certain amount of time, usually 15 minutes, to see if it remains steady. If it does, then it will go off.

Hi Got a question for you if I have natural gas or propane my question is do you think co alarm provides adequate protection I mean the opinion of a retired firefighter was that natural gas or propane you are going to be able to smell it so his idea was he thought that he seemed to say that he thought what was important was to have adequate co alarms ! he said he thought something that detect natural gas or propane was only going to be useful if you have diminished sense of smell thoughts please thank you! I mean if I an unable to afford a low level alarm do you think the above advice is correct thoughts please thank you!
@JamieR20772 жыл бұрын
Remember these are made to go off after a certain amount of time at certain levels, it's something like 4 minutes. This is to prevent false alarms and so it doesn't "cry wolf" too much causing people to not trust it.

@Bigfishfun3332 жыл бұрын
An alarm that goes off "first", if it goes off real quickly, might be too sensitive....if it's too sensitive the real world is that people get frustrated with them going off all the time, and get rid of them - so they have no detector at all.

Today my kidde smoke and carbon dioxide detector awaken me this morning. Fire dept. called and they detected nothing. It went off again a 3rd time while they were here. It’s dated for 2016 and to be good for 10 years. I open this new box March 2021. It never alarmed before. The battery is life long and not changeable. I had no humidity, my pilot light was blue not orange or yellow that would indicates positive CO but none detected. I had slight headache after I think hyperventilating fresh cold air. Direction state to leave out of house immediately. Because fire department detected no co I’m trying to figure out a reliable smoke and co detector.

@neilbrookins84282 жыл бұрын
The UL rating for behavior at 400 ppm says that it must alert within 15 minutes. That means after 14 minutes if it hasn’t alerted you have not yet failed the test. If it alerts after 14 minutes and 55 seconds then the test passes because it alerted in under 15 minutes. You are claiming that these alarms not going off is a bad thing. But that behavior is allowed by UL rating during the first few minutes. In fact, at lower ppm if the alarm goes off too soon it will fail the UL tests. Example at 200 ppm UL alarm must sound between 30 and 60 minutes. If it sounds too early at just 29 minutes then it fails the test.

This has to be one of the worst experiments I've ever seen. Putting all of them in the same bag means you're testing 3 variables at once so the outcome is meaningless for several reasons. Firstly you sprayed it directly on the detector you are trying to sell, secondly you didn't cover how each one detects CO, some use a chemical reaction that results in a gel changing color which is detected using an LED and sensor. That means that it is possible that (in a tiny baggy with an unmeasured amount of CO sprayed in) as the CO disperses it came in contact with the first CO detector which could possibly have decreased the concentration of CO by consuming some amount of it in the chemical reaction that results in a change of color. A good test would have been to take each detector put them in separate vacuum sealed bags with a one way valve then inject the exact same amount of air with a fixed CO concentration into each bag and measure the time in seconds it takes for the alarm to sound. If one didn't go off, safely dispose of it and get another of the exact same kind and perform the test again with an increased amount of CO. BOOM SCIENCE! It really isn't that hard. If you weren't a simple installer/repair man and were a real scientist with access to a real lab then it would probably be a good idea to use an air mixture that simulates the expected concentration of air in a normal room. I.E. make the air you are testing contain an exact mixture of CO, O2, CO2, N... to rule out any other variables while most accurately simulating a real world situation.

They add it to natural gas and propane gas to detect leaks., What carbon monoxide is a gas caused by incomplete combustion of natural gas, propane, gasoline, or any other hydrocarbon. Think of carbon monoxide as a gas created by incompletely burning another gas like propane or natural gas.To explain it further would be a long lesson in organic chemistry.

Thank you for your life saving test. I wondered about this because of 6 carbon monoxide injuries and 1 death in a 15,000 sq mansion in Oak Brook, Illinois January 2014. Fire officials said the carbon monoxide detectors were "not functioning". I wondered how could that be. The source of the C01 was a pool heater. And Yes, I bought my 3 separate brands of C01 detectors at big box stores. Now I know... So I'll be looking for better detectors.

I put them in my garage with the door open and a car running nearby with the exhaust facing the detector and the display reads 000. I have also put them directly in the exhaust and they still show nothing. I am not expecting an alarm, but showing no CO does not give me confidence. thanks

Catalytic converters convert CO to CO2, and don't go above 100 PPPM CO, if I recall correctly. So car exhaust would arguably not give a guaranteed result.

For those of you wondering about spraying the CO expert sensor, this could have a difference in which one responds first. BUT you must remember that gases distribute freely throughout a space. Therefore, if the CO expert had gone off and then maybe there was a delay in the others, then I would consider there to be too many variables. I think the whole idea was to show low level detection vs high levels. Not brand advertisement. I am actually looking at changing the one that was given to me by my landlord.
