We were good friends with Elton Rule, who retired as ABC's COO in NYC. He got his start at KCOP in the early 1950s, drumming up business for TV commercials. In those days, shows were only 15 minutes long and commercials were all live (delivered by hosts like Tom Frandsen, Betty White and the inimitable Dick Lane, who did everything but wash dishes). Elton told us sometimes he was only minutes away from securing a deal with sponsors before their spot would go on the air. Sponsors were usually local stores and car dealerships.

A "Good television station" as opposed to the bad ones. And man! That KCOP studio was ghetto as all heck even back in 1993 when a broadcast engineer that I knew and worked there invited me for a look inside. La Brea and Willoughby. Across the street from the infamous Bargain Circus store that made the .99 cent store look like Sears. But then again even the .99 cent store looks better than Sears today.

Well, 1993 was 25 years after they opened this studio in 1968 or so. Hollywood went seriously downhill in those 25 years. Pretty much everywhere was ghetto by then. In the 1960s pretty much everywhere in Hollywood was still a real nice place.

Ah, KCOP. I remember so many things from there growing up. Bowling for Dollars, Hobo Kelly. Weekday afternoons with TransLux cartoons. And then Paramount bought them and KCOP was no more.

Noted film historian Rudy Behlmer, featured on many a classic film audio commentary, was a producer/director/stage manager there. He worked on those commercials.

KCOP was always last behind KTLA, KHJ and KTTV... They had some "somewhat odd" in-house commercials in the early '70s.

Those spots were usually of local businesses at the time, often done with a good slab of echo, much like radio did as well. I’d love to see a good bunch of those treasures!

? How did LA manage to have 4 VHF independents ( 5 KTLA, 9 KHJ, 11 KTTV, 13 KCOP ) in the 3rd largest city ( 1950s-70s ), as compared to 3 VHF Independents in NYC ( 5 WNEW, 9 WOR, 11 WPIX ) and compared to 1 VHF in Chicago ( 9 WGN ), long before Chicago got a 2nd & 3rd UHF Independent ( 26 WCIU...which was BW for many years, 1964, and 32 WFLD 1966 ) ... DC had 2 by late 60s ( 5 WTTG, 20 WDCA ) Detroit had 3 ( CKLW 9, Windsor, 50, 62 ) Cleveland 2 ( 43 61 ) Denver 1 ( 2 KWGN ) ... ? Did the 4 LA Station get enough market share in viewership as compared to the larger markets of NYC and Chicago ??

New York did have a commercial channel 13 until the early 1960s when the license went to an educational operator. My supposition with Chicago is that VHF frequencies were limited due to allocations to surrounding markets. Chicago had VHF 2, 5, 7, 9, 11 like New York, while adjacent Milwaukee had 4, 6, 10, 12. While NY had a channel 13, in the case of Chicago this was allocated to Indianapolis, so additional stations had to wait until UHF became viable. Also, one of the stations in LA (KTLA-5) was a Dumont network affiliate, as was channel 5 in NY, so these did not start life as independents.
