As they say "the fiddle is a rhythm instrument". Thank you Mr. Molsky!

Bruce is a true master of the bow. His drone tone just gets into the bones. And those vocals are just awesome!

and he does the controcanto to his own voice too, quite peculiar, but still keeping on the traditional.

Jed Todd wrote: "...rebel raid is normally in AEAE ( ed haley) this does'nt sound like rebel raid though," Bruce's Molsky's version here sounds very similar to the version by the late Jim Taylor of Mars Hill, NC (hammered dulcimer) and Bruce Greene (fiddle) on Taylor's album titled "Civil War Collection Volume 1", track #4. Taylor & co.'s version can be found on KZbin and in my large Southern playlist (when I attempt to provide link it doesn't appear--sorry). Accompanying Taylor & Greene on track # 4 are Sheila Kay Adams (banjo), and Tom Draughon (guitar). Here are the liner notes on "Rebel Raid" from Taylor/Greene's version: "Bruce Greene got this tune from a 1937 Library of Congress recording of William Stepp of Lakeville, Kentucky. The title is most likely making reference to one of Morgan's famous raids through Kentucky and points further north. I've been unable to unearth any information on the tune itself, though I suspect it is indigenous to Kentucky...." -- Jim Taylor of Mars Hill, NC, liner notes to album titled "Civil War Collection Volume 1", track #4 ["Rebel Raid, (then) Abe's Retreat]. © Jim Taylor 1995. A friendly "hello" to you, Jed!

I think there are two unrelated "Rebel Raids"; this one in G and the other in AEAE.

If you're interested, you should check out "Lazy John" by Chance McCoy and the Appalachian String Band. Best version I've ever heard. Chance plays with Old Crow now.

I like the Chance McCoy version too, but I have to mention that they got the words wrong on the chorus.

Bruce is also a master of alternate tunings. Not sure what this tuning is though?
