If we go back in time, we can see how it will all lead to newer avenues of knowledge. The Munnar-Kodaikanal Escape Road, which was closed over three decades ago, also has a lot of historical stories to tell. The journey of history to Escape Road begins in 1864. The British Army was looking for a suitable place to set up a military cantonment for the officers to stay. Colonel Douglas Hamilton, an Army officer at the time, saw the Berijam area in the Palani Hills.
He reported that this was the most suitable area for the establishment of a military cantonment. Many wealthy families came to live in this place called Kodaikanal. The main attraction of the place was the Berijam Lake and the cool climate.
There was also a military outpost named after Douglas Hamilton. The name was Fort Hamilton. Though there was a 'fort' in the name, ironically it was a small hut! An artificial lake was built in the area in 1867. Veer Levine, the then Madurai Collector, donated the money he received from his retirement to build the lake. The dam and reservoir were constructed with that money.

We a group of 8 members travelled through this all the way to Kodaikanal in 1993. that time this was route was not closed. It was an amazing experience !!!. In this route up to Berijam lake there is no road at all.

Thanks for this video. I was looking for this 😊. Berijam Lake ❤️. Bro Kodai road is not Kodaikanal town. It’s a different place. Escape Road is actually 80Km from Kodaikanal to Munnar. I went till Berijam from Kodaikanal last year. It’s 25KM through forest

രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധകാലത്ത് Japan സേന മദ്രാസിൽ ബോംബിടുകയും ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ മദ്രാസിൽ നിന്ന് കൊച്ചി തുറമുഖം വഴി രക്ഷപെടാനും ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ നിന്ന് സമ്പാദിച്ചുണ്ടാക്കിയ സ്വർണ്ണവും, വജ്രങ്ങളും മറ്റു മൂല്യമേറിയ വസ്തുക്കളും ആരുമായാതെ കടത്താനുമാണ് ഈ റോഡ് നിർമ്മിച്ചത്, ചില ആദിവാസികൾ പറയുന്നത് പ്രകാരം പണ്ട് ഇത് വഴി സ്വർണ്ണം കൊണ്ട് വന്ന 18 കുതിരവണ്ടികൾ ഈ വഴി കടന്നില്ലന്നും ഈ വഴിയുടെ നടക്കു എവിടെയോ അത് ഒളിപ്പിച്ചെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. പിന്നീട് ആണ് ഈ വഴി അടക്കുകയും ജനങ്ങൾ കടക്കുന്നതും നിരോധിച്ചത്, സ്വർണ്ണം കണ്ട് പിടിക്കാർ പലരും ശ്രമിച്ചങ്കിലും നടന്നില്ല, ഇതിനെ സമ്പത്തിച്ച് ഒരു പാരമ്പര്യമായി നില നിന്ന് പോകുന്ന ഒരു പാട്ട് പോലും അവിടത്തെ ആദിവാസികളുടെ ഇടയിൽ ഉണ്ട്. അതിൽ പറയുന്ന പ്രകാരം അന്ന് ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരുടെ കൈയിൽ സൗത്തിന്ത്യയിൽ നിന്ന് നേടിയ സമ്പാദ്യത്തിൻ്റെ മൂന്നിലൊന്നാണ് ഈ കാനനപാതയുടെ മധ്യത്തിൽ എവിടെയോ ഒളിപ്പിച്ചത്

അവിടെ കണ്ട ബോർഡിൽ കൊടൈക്കനാൽ 35 എന്നത് കൊടൈക്കനാൽ ടൗണിലേക്കുള്ള ദൂരം തന്നെയാണ്. കൊടൈറോഡ് (85 km)എന്ന സ്ഥലം പളനി ഡണ്ടിഗൽ ഹൈവേയിൽ നിന്നും കൊടൈക്കനാലിലേക്കുള്ള പ്രധാന പാത തിരിയുന്ന ജംഗ്ഷൻ ആണ്. കൂടാതെ പളനി ഡണ്ടിഗൽ റെയിൽവേ ലൈനിൽ കൊടൈറോഡ് എന്ന് പേരിൽ ഇതേ സ്ഥലത്ത് ഒരു സ്റ്റേഷനുമുണ്ട്. ഇനിയും ഇങ്ങനെ തെറ്റി പറയല്ലേ ചേട്ടാ.

നിങ്ങൾ ആ കാണിച്ചത് കിലോമീറ്റർ കല്ലുകളല്ല, അത് പഴയ മൈൽ കുറ്റികളാണ്. 3 കി.മീ എന്ന് നിങ്ങൾ പറഞ്ഞത് 3 മൈൽ ആണ്. അതായത് 5 km എന്നാണ്. അത് ആലോചിച്ചാൽ തന്നെ നമുക്കറിയാവുന്നതാണ്.പഴയ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് റോഡുകളിൽ Km കല്ലുകൾ കാണില്ല, മൈൽ കല്ലുകളെ കാണുകയുള്ളു
