The fact that McTominay and Fred were United's starting DM pairing today is very telling of how bad the club is run at the top. It is insane that anyone can watch United over the last decade, as they appointed proven manager after proven manager, and still think they are looking for the 'right man'. I'm completely astonished by United's failure to realise that vast majority of the problems are stemming from that incredibly mediocre midfield. They have some of the most technically gifted offensive players in the league, and they've bought valuable reinforcements at the back; HOWEVER, they have not strengthened their weakest area. One cannot possibly expect Ten Haag (which is an accomplished gentleman) to turn the tables if he has to go against the likes of Liverpool and City, with McTominay and Fred in the middle of the park. Maybe its high time that the management, board and fanbase realise that the problem has been stemming from the abysmal quality of United's midfield. Maybe they also need to realise that it wasn't Van Gaal's, Mourinho's, Moyes', Solskjaer's or Ragnick's fault.

As a neutral fan, looking at United's squad for the last couple of years they clearly need a new midfield. If you control midfield, the chances are good that you will either win the game or at least not lose. Fred and McTominay have done the best they can but it's not enough and United need a huge upgrade if they want to get back to where they were. That's just the beginning! They also need to sort out the back four (or three, if Ten Hag switches tactics). Martinez is a good start but he needs a genuine top class defender next to him. Maguire's not the answer.

The full backs Dalot and Shaw had a stinker, along with most of the midfield. The whole team just looked so slow coming out from the back or setting up plays around the goal - too predictable like last year. Will be another challenging season by the looks of it..

United is in such a mess that they don't even have same "pulling" factor for top players anymore. They couldn't even convince Frenkie De Jong to join. He knew that he will be wasted there. The whole mismanagement started a downward spiral long time ago. I remember after José Mourinho first arrived at Real Madrid after winning the Treble with Inter, after a couple of trainings he said "Madrid's squad is not structured according to the Magnitude of the Entity. I think today's Man U have a similar problem, heck even Ragnick said it last year. In football I think the big results are decided as an aggregation of small outcomes. Like for example imagine instead of Rashford you had a winger with more goal or instead of Maguire you had a defender with better football IQ. I used to hold on to the (fading) hope that while we had made a lot of mistakes over the last decade, the people in charge had some sensibilities and would eventually get it right. When we started this season (after the disaster of last season) with Fred, McTominay, Dalot, Rashford and yes even Sancho and they put in that performance it was clear that there is incompetence, ignorance and arrogance running through the veins of this club. I can’t believe we are set back by Martial being Injured. How is this club still dependant on Martial to lead the attack after all these years?? How is the club linked to a 33 year old arnautovic After the experience of Cavani and Ighalo??. How is our entire season dependant on whether Barcelona can sort its obligations to its players??? Think everyone has to recognise by now that this United team are just not that good on a player by player individual basis. Whatever those players were before, they're no longer the same- best example of that is Fernandes.. By comparison Spurs have 2 genuine world class forwards, with Kulusevski coming like a freight train into world class status and Romero also hovering about. Arsenal every season have a couple of their young players jump up in quality due to their age. Chelsea slightly upgraded from last season imo. United don't have a single world class player. Not even close right now. Not. Even. Close. The supporting cast that fill out the team are also just not very good and will eventually cast off to mid-lower table clubs in the future.

I feel sorry for Ten Hag. He should have taken onboard Rangnick's assessment of these players. Rangnick has built football clubs from scratch and there are not many people who are able to do that in modern football. Ten Hag was naive not to have listened to him. Instead, he chose to ignore and give everyone a clean slate. Unfortunately, there is no time in the premier league for clean slate. I hope he survives a season. Looking like united will finish 10th this season.
