In this video I'll show you how you can use MAutoVolume to keep your vocals, guitar or other lead instrument on top of your mix. MAutoVolume will boost the volume of your vocals as the volume of the rest of your mix increases. This can be a real time saver when you want your vocals to stay upfront.

I was utilizing Waves Vocal Rider but the M Auto Volume is easier, more intuitive and seems to do a better job in most instance.

Could you explain a little more what you're doing in adjusting the background gain on the sidechain? I found the explanation in the plug-in help a little bit hard to follow.

Basically I want to get the gain set so that the sidechain is hitting at a level where it isn't constantly boosting or cutting the signal. Basically the average is around the 0 mark, but of course you don't need to be too precise. This will give you the most range as far as gain reduction and boosting goes. If you don't do this the side chain might be too quiet, so the plugin constantly boosts at 100%, or the opposite might happen. You want the plugin to constantly be moving, so you adjust the gain until it hits that perfect point. It isn't always nessicarry, but I like to do it just in case. I don't know if that is more clear, but I hope it helps.

@@Chandlerguitar Yes, that's very helpful. You seem to be one of the only ones out there on the Internet trying to help people understand the Melda plug-ins, which is too bad, because they seem like solid, very deep plug-ins that suffer from not enough explanation of how to use them. Don't get me started on the unhelpful preset names in some of the reverb and delay plugins. Anyway, one other question: If the goal is to keep a vocal louder than the backing material from the sidechain, why are you trying to equalize the level between the input gain and the output gain on the plug-in? Wouldn't you want the output to be consistently higher than the input, because you're looking to add extra level with the plug-in? Or is the extra gain from the plug-in added after whatever gain level is measured on the output gain meter of the plugin? So it's the output level gain reading from the output meter plus whatever gain reading is showing on the G meter to its right?

@@jakelondon Thanks. The reason I even out the gain is just my personal work flow. Basically I try to get the level I want out of the vocal before I use the plugin. However there will always be some parts that are too soft(or maybe a bit too loud). The plug in helps to bring out those softer parts so that everything is at the level I want. That is just how I personally do it though, so if you want to boost it all the time you could. I just like to get it almost perfect before using the plugin and the plugin fixes the little parts that are off.

@@Chandlerguitar Okay, that's helpful. I'm experimenting with this plug-in to use with a voiceover that has music behind it. So looking for something that can dynamically keep the voice loud enough that it doesn't get drowned out by the music. The help on the plug-in's meters says that the output level presents the signal after all processing. So it seems like the goal of your workflow is to use the sidechain content to dynamically lower the LRA of your track while keeping the final level constant. Is that right? Conversely, what I'm trying to do is allow the overall output level of the voiceover track to fluctuate up and down dynamically based on up and down fluctuations in the loudness of the sidechain content. Does that seem right?

@@jakelondon Yes that is basically correct. I want my global level to be basically the same after processing. I try to get a good general level and then use this for certain times where I'm speaking too softly or say a word too loud. It doesn't have to be used this way though.

Hi Chandler, which Tempo mode would you advise for Vocals to sound natural? Thanks and greets
@Chandlerguitar
@Chandlerguitar 4 жыл бұрын
I depends, but generally I'd go with a slower setting. Faster settings sound more like compression.

Yes you definitely can. You'd most likely want to use it on the background tracks though, instead of your lead instrument. Thank you for watching.
