Are you worried about all that carbon clogging up your catalytic converters?

Not at all. I'd be more worried lack of maintenance in a GDI engine, especially with carbon buildup reducing engine flow, reducing combustion chamber size (effectively increasing compression) and that impact on not only engine mechanical but the catalyst since the engine is not running as efficient.

If there is only air going across the intake valve, how is carbon building up? I have seen pictures, but I don't understand how the carbon gets to the valves.

​@@968porsche9the fuel is not being sprayed on the intake valve so normal operation like a port fuel injected vehicle doesn't help clean the valves. There is a tendency for a small amount of oil to pass the rings which increases carbon buildup, as well as lower grade fuels.
