You can pick up stitches without knitting them. If you look at tutorials for doing after thought heels it shows just picking up stitches. When you pick up stitches on an edge you pick up the stitch and you knit it. I remember being confused about this too. Thanks for the podcast.

If you crochet with it, try tall stitches. It might be more appealing that way. (The variegated yarn you were gifted.
