What started as a quick test of my new bait caster turned into a pretty solid bite. The Halibut were in a frenzy and Striper were in the mix, the perfect combination for a great day on the water. Did I mention Great Whites?

Awesome work you put in and always with nice results. Anyone can catch them off the boat or kayak, but consistently pulling them out from the surf takes a lot of work and most importantly skills. And you definitely have skills Everett 😊

Headed to the surf the other day and wanted to throw around my artificial eels, needed extra weight to get to my target zone, used a 2oz sinker dropshotted on my 20lb mono and managed to catch a schoolie in the hour I was there.

The traditional fluke is getting it done for some keepers but might consider upping to a swimmin fluke or magnum. I know there is 30 inch plus flatties in the mix and a bigger bait, is something different which they have not seen. The bigger zoom seem to produce less strikes but bigger fish.

Do you know of a hook with a long enough shank to rig a magnum?

@@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 Check out the tackle warehouse site on swim bait hooks and click on the VMC IKE Approved heavy duty swim bait hook. These run in 3/0 to 7/0 size a pack of 4 is just 3 bucks . These are really sharp, strong and you can run a bead stop on the shank then add a treble as a stinger if the fish are sort striking . Mike Iaconelli the bass master pro and team made these. Another option is the Berkley fusion 19 which are a bit more, 4.50 for a pack of 4 and these have a coating over the hook that makes the hooks slide through plastics super easy thus fast hook sets, They come in 3/0 to 7/0 as well. There are additonal EWG Extra wide gap long shank hooks but the VMC ike and Fusion 19 are probably the best options and not wallet busters.

What are the colors of your bait? And do you mind telling us roughly the location you're catching these fish. I've only caught striper twice last year in SF Nothing in Santa Cruz but will be going in the next few days. Are you reading the waves or is there a consistent location where fish like to hang out. Sorry with the questions. Trying to catch my first halibut 🥺. Great video BTW!!!

Everet won the prestigious San Francisco MTF tournament striped bass tourny for a cool 1000 bucks on his first tournament try. which i told him he was going to win and it came as no real surprise he won. Just a pure natural angler with attributes you normally don't see in someone his age group. WE got lots of kids fishing in this fishing community but few real anglers in the true sense of the word. What makes the difference? How about a angler who gets up before sun rise bikes to the beach for a session then bikes back to school and back to the beach for round 2.
@JudeDeras
@JudeDeras 4 жыл бұрын
jim bo is Everett the kid in the video? I always watched a fisherman’s life but he’s gotten alway from beach fishing... I like this kids videos.. I never used drop shots like that only lucky crafts or Carolinas from the beach. With much lighter test than he uses. Good to know strippers and halibut are not line shy considering he’s using 40lb or so .. keep posting and thanks for responding

@jimbo4612

Santa Cruz striped bass are not as easy to catch as you mention. Way different vs other regions striped bass. Reason being the stripers here are selective in their diet and when they find a food source that's usually the only thing they will hit. Fished the east coast, land locked lakes , Calif delta and can tell you most Santa cruz stripers are picky feeders. Seen Delta striper pros and bay area experts get skunked down here regularl unable to find the right pattern to get bites.

@@jimbo4612 wow, never knew about that. Thank you. When I get skunk I think can be current, tide, weather, pressure, time of day, bait.........moon. Can there be no fish?? No luck? List continues.

@@sleelee84 Santa Cruz striped bass seem to prefer live anchovies over anything else and there is no place here to buy them live. Anglers have to jig up their own and the anchovies will not come close enough to catch during rougher water days. Striped bass here will go on a feed then not feed for several days vs a Halibut which has to feed regularly given their small stomachs
