Hey guys, this video will cover everything about keeping and breeding rabbit snails, also known as Sulawesi snails or elephant snails in your aquarium. Unlike other snails, these snails do not overpopulate your tank and there are many varieties of colours and patterns.
Sorry guys, accidentally this video so this is just a reupload.

hey fantastic video loved. so i just bought a rabbit snail today from a local fish store. i have a 200 litre tank. i put the snail into my tank and it just lay at bottom i got worried thinking it was dead. so i left living room for about 20 minutes i came to the snail had dissapeared couldnt find it. i looked around and found a little mound in substrate. i dug and found the snail had buried itself is this normal ? its the first snail ive ever bought. so the snail has stayed under the substrate so far so should i be worried ?

Rabbit snails breed in fresh water, the larvae of some other snails live in saltwater the first few months, maybe he was confused or it was a snail that looks like this but does need saltwater to breed. Some snails like nerite snails can also live in brackish water. Not al snails hate salt.

PH buffers should allow you to reach pH 8.5, (although 7.5Ph is fine already for rabbit snails), if your finding it hard to maintain that pH, it might mean you have low kH, and need to increase that. I have another video on aquarium chemistry which explains the process

@@equinoxdept it’s very simple! Natural processes in a tank cause acidity! Over time your tank will go acidic if it has no, or low Kh which is carbonate hardness! Carbonate hardness that is low will have zero or very little feet at reversing the acidity towards alkaline. Anything under 7 is acid. Above 7 is alkaline. So, to keep your water from going acid, you need a strong enough carbonate hardness, KH, so that it can fight against the acidity and either keep the ph stable or move it towards alkalinity. It all depends on how acid and how much carbonate hardness you have! So you have to learn the balance! You can buy powder acid and powder alkaline/carbonate hardness powder and get exactly where you want to be! Once you find where you want to be, you need a good buffer! Buffering capacity is the ability of a solution (your tank water) to hold it PH. With low buffering capacity, the ph will swing wildly one way or the other! Seachem makes great products for doing all of these things!

Hope u can answer my question. I have a 2 inch chocolate rabbit snail. But i just noticed he doesnt have a trapdoor. Hes still alive but isnt as active as my other rabbit snails. Can they survive without a trapdoor? I do not keep any fishes with my snails. Theyre homed in a planted aquarium with other snails.
@aaronws9561
@aaronws9561 4 жыл бұрын
Looks like no one answered your question but seeing as I have raised a variety of snails I think .i can give you some good feedback. Not have an operculum (trapdoor) is not always a death sentence, but it can be. If the snail is in with fish that might harass it then the lack of an operculum means it will have no respite from harassment. Even with the operculum, however, that situation wouldn’t be great for a snail. For a snail alone the operculum is still useful, but not absolutely necessary AFAIK. It will be harder for the snail to sleep and it will be more prone to stress. Likely it will seek to bury itself or hide in dark areas when it needs its snail “alone time”. But chugging alone looking for food and whatnot the snail will be just fine. It may lead a normal life even, but I suspect the worst case scenario is that it will have a slightly dismissed life expectancy from feeling a bit more stressed without the operculum.

Rabbit snails have a small operculum. You just might not be seeing it or it has one so small it’s not noticeable.

i can understand the "if u wanna breed, keep only 1 species" partly but would say "u have to". i for myself will try and go the hybrid breeding way. the simple fact that they can crossover tells nature itself is ok with this process, unless the hybrids become non breeders as a evolution lock. but highly doubt it since its fro mthe same base family and its like a european crossover with an african or asian. normally those cultures arent next to each other like some tylo species, yet if they connect and succefully breed there is another way life finds its way. and im eager to see what tylomelania hybrids can look like or become. my current olive hybrid (thats the best known hybrid so far) thrives just fine and even more hardened then its former parents. maybe someone would say "you play god" but i dont think that way, neither do the shrimp breeders with their colour variations. and i dont even enforce it since i still got currently from 3 tylospecies 4 of each and if they want/like to cross by themselve than thats natures way

@@fawneh1359come on, you know that eventually they will end up polluting the gene pool. someone will give them to someone who won't care. these snails might become extinct in nature due to all the pollution. it's best not to mix them (same goes for all other animals).

@@ZYGTropicals Are you certain? I’ve never heard that, but it seems to add risk to the shipping process. I would also think it depends on how they are shipped. most people ship with the snails merely in tissue soaked in water to maintain high humidity and the snails close their shells and go into low activity mode. I can see getting away without breather bags since their oxygen consumption would be reduced, by my philosophy is why chance it to save on inexpensive little baggies. But if you ship the snails in water where they might remain active? I think you’d run a risk of killing the snails without a breather bag. OTOH, maybe you have a lot of experience with this?

Very easy to breed CPD’s!!! Super easy!! Set up a tank and make sure it’s cycled. Make sure you have adult, conditioned fish to breed. Females are larger and fatter! Put sand on the bottom of the tank. Then put a layer of Java moss over the bottom at about 2-3” thick. After conditioning the fish, add them to the breeding tank a couple hours before lights out at night so they have a bit of time to get use to the tank before lights out. Make sure your temp is around 78-80 deg. Do not feed them in this breeding tank. Oh, and you should be using a seasoned sponge filter for filtration. In the morning when it’s time for lights on is when they will usually start breeding! After 3-4 days, remove the fish and keep the sponge filter going and constant temp. Babies will be free swimming by the 4th day, so make sure you take out the adults by the 4th day! Breeding them is the easy part! Raising the fry is the hard part! The fry are too small for brine shrimp or even micro worms or Walter worms etc. you will need industrial for the first week or so. Then you can move onto Walter worms etc and after that, then brine shrimp. Water quality is crucial!! And too big of water changes will kill the fry. So it’s all about multiple small water changes done on a daily basis! I usually do small water changes 3 times a day for the first 3 weeks. Then once a day for another 3 weeks, then every other day.
