I'm in lock step with Rod. I have been consistent with my stance regarding which fish shouldn't be in the hobby and where the responsibility falls when it comes to buying them. It's the retailers job to list how big the fish get, but it's 100% the customer's responsibility to determine whether they can keep it or not. The tired old excuse that, "Oh, I didn't know" simply doesn't fly anymore, and it hasn't for a decade or two. Everyone in the hobby walks around with a mini computer either stuck to their hand or tucked in their pocket, and all it takes is 30 seconds to look up the information you need to make a decision.

This is a great comment!!🥰 I'm a PetSmart manager who runs the aquatic dept. (and a 40+ years fishkeeper) and I do my dead-level best to educate my customers as much as they'll listen. Some of them don't want PROPER information, believe it or not. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️😩

I only keep small fish, the biggest fish I kept was a bristlenose pleco 😄. This was fun to listen to during waterchanges though. But I like listening to people who are passionate about something and can tell about it well and this guy is one of those people.

I've been following Rod on KZbin for years and he is one of the most passionate people in the industry. The risks he's taken to create such a unique business is mind blowing. His enthusiasm for fish and the hobby in general is infectious.

Wow, what an amazing story. I have young children, that you were willing to make that deal to take the fish back when it's too big is a really awesome experience and teaching moment. Keep up the great work!

Disclaimer i havent watched the whole podcast yet, but i have found, through observation, that certain monster fiah can potentially be kept in a smaller aquarium, PROVIDED that they are an inactive species. I personally dont keep "monster" fish but i watch others who do. However i still stand by bigger tanks is always better.

Not a day goes by I don’t miss my iredescent sharks. They were nearly 2 feet long and ate whole filets of tilapia from my hand. They were the sweetest fish I will never keep again. They grew and grew and the more they did the more I loved them, so when the day came to rehome them I was so sad to see them go but happy they could be homed in a giant pond. Personally huge fish, mister fish have some of the best personalities of nearly all fish but if you are not prepared you may have to act like I did to make sure they continue to thrive. Personally is I could have a giant pond or pool like OFR, I would keep them all! Every fish is precious absolutely but the ones that grow and grow and you see them watching you and or learn the best way to handle/feed them there is a bond that’s unbreakable formed. I feel the same nearly with my peacocks and Oscar’s but there is just something about a gentle giant that makes them stand out and not just physically. For my sharks it was learning they don’t like sudden movements and so I let them explore my arm and hand when I dipped the food in for them and I NEVER had an issue, I do know they have massive bars on their fins so I was knowingly taking a small risk putting my whole arm in the tank with them but it was always a pleasure seeing them and feeding them, just letting go to this day makes me teary eyed, no joke. But the phrase comes to mind, with great power comes great responsibility, in that monster fish need monster care, even a 300 gallon to a lot of these fish is too small and to almost any person that’s a massive tank. Meet your match not compete to keep, win or lose they depend on the fish keeper even more than a typical fish. But never set the bar too low and never be afraid to do enough, they depend on it, great episode and always great seeing the champ Rod, stay happy and healthy my friends!

No monster Fish for me. They belong in the lake NOT lwater boxes. Maybe you should try living in a 6ft square box for a while. I don’t think you’d like it.

Yes there is a difference between surviving and thrivig and if we say survival is good enough I think we put the bar on the ground. For any animal.
