Pigeons came into John O'Brien's life at just the right time.
His relationship with drink was becoming a major sticking point in his life. He now focuses his energy on racing pigeons, of which he now has more than three dozen, and is PRO of the Irish Homing Union.
Pigeon fanciers are a dying breed. Membership of pigeon racing associations has declined since the 1980s, but O'Brien - originally from Kevin Street but now living in Clondalkin - has hopes to reverse that through initiatives such as getting school children interested at a young age.
And after the 'Messi of pigeons' was sold for €1.25 million, you would expect a few more people might be taking interest...

Ilove Mike Tyson. I grew up with him, and my Dad loved boxing and martial arts. When I told my Dad about my Pigeon hobby, he reminded me that our last name is Pigeon, and mentioned Tyson. I have a similar story, the Pigeons took me away from a sad time in my life, a turning point. I met the man that fed the rock pigeons in the park, and I saw the beauty in them, and learned about them, and it has been 16 years in the hobby. I live in Toronto Canada.

Peoples attitudes have changed since the seventies as property values have risen people do not want pigeons defecating on their roof and attracting rodents when i was growing up in Ireland in the 60s and 70s i had two friends that had lofts and i loved helping them and just watching the birds my parents would'nt let me have a loft because of the possibility of attracting rodents,if you have great neighbours then its a great hobby.

Id rather that you go down the pub, those pidgeons are smelly attract flies all day long, They are a pain in the arse to neighbour's & people in and around your pidgeon gardens... But you wouldn't care or concider anyone else.

perhaps you should understand what pigeons have and do for life before you comment. from 1 of the best natural fertilizers, many less mice and rats, the beauty of a flock in flight, the fact that all intelligent scientists can't explain how racing homers can get back from up to thousands of miles from a place they have never been, and think about money and time spent by people like him or me who now don't spent billions on being drunk. can i take you a thousand miles from your home blindfolded and make it back on 2 days with no map or speaking to anyone and make it home ? or maybe you would like to hear my neighbors tell how happy they are to see an incredible landscape on the hill next to the road that i do almost 0 care to as even when a drought in this area is happening (no watering from me)the flowers still grow and partially from the poop . in the past the smelly poop as you call it was so important guards were posted and people killed to protect the green gold you don't like as they would have starved without it. go to new york to see the rats and the pigeons and see how much waisted food is eaten by them and calculate the increase of rats with that much more food for them without pigeons. being wrong is not a problem when you can admit it as you might understand some day. also see how many people release white doves (pigeons) at weddings or funerals or sporting events to the cheers of many as pigeons are doves. how many birds eat from your hand daily when they can fly away anytime the like ? or ask the homeless person feeding them in the park what brings them at least a little happiness every day. and don't forget the number of people who didn't starve during the great depression from eating the smelly birds while financially rich people coveted there stacks of cash.
