Keeping cacti in Canada seems like an impossible task but this prickly pear has been in my life for years now. I have a few plants I've created from one pad. The cactus you have is called Opuntia. I live in Ontario and during the winter I keep it in the dark indoors, no light, never any issues. In the summer I keep it outdoors in semi direct light that gets filtered through trees, to avoid it from burning, and out of direct rain to avoid rot. So far no fruit and its been 5 years. One plant is + 5 feet tall, and another us about 1 meter. I also have an Eastern Prickly Pear which can survive the winters outdoors. They grow low and super thorny. It has fruited once. They are pretty cool. When cactus flower, it is best to avoid turning or moving them as the pad will deform and twist as it grows towards the sun.

I don’t unfortunately. I have never looking into the online world of plants. I know that Clements greenhouses in Saskatoon has eucalyptus. I tried it once and it did well outside bringing it indoors was a completely different beast. They really love sunshine

Lol yes lol warm weather...I find its a fine art keeping cacti in Canada lol Prickly pear can take some cool temperatures so any warm up will make it grow ...I do like the green in winter lol I don't believe in putting them in the cool dark cuz you can't get it dark enough it won't go dormate and it usually dies I still love my cacti my drafty window is good enough for winter summer they want to go outside near the Apple tree :)

I understand there are at least a few species of opuntia that are hardy down to at least Penticton. I'm in Prince George and I might get an opuntia and see if it's hardy outdoors (on a high hill so it drains well)

I was gifted 3 pads by someone in Ottawa. Hers are outside in the ground year round and they're huge. So they can definitely survive for you.

That is an impressive looking cactus! I think I mentioned a guy in Winnipeg that grew cacti in his yard. He was Dr Cacti, Ernie Brown. The facebook page is still up and it has some magnificent specimens. There is an archived article from the Winnipeg Free Press as well. He shared his knowledge with as many as he could. I wish I had a chance to take advantage of it. I think it would be great to include a couple of succulents in my yard. Diversity is the key to sustainability no? Sure I summer my Kalanchoe, X-mas Cactus in my yard with my poinsettia ( i know not a succulent) and bring them indoors by Labour Day. But to have a plot of Brittle Prickly Pear & Pincushion Cacti would bring some wonder to my landscape. A boy can dream I suppose. Just too much going on to take a project on these days. @@GardeningInCanada I had no luck with my sedums...but I probably made some rookie mistakes...I am finding these days that succulents are overpriced. I am kicking myself though when I saw a display @ a discount store selling succulents for 2 or 3 bucks a piece. I went back the next day they were all gone. The cashier said someone bought the entire display. They brought more in the following week, but priced them at $10 each. All I can say is to have a yard like that, he had a passion for what he did. Not a hobby. I read some of the posts, if you missed his seminar, he'd invite you to his yard and he'd chat. Thanks for your reply, stay cool, it's a scorcher out there

Ok .. wow ... lol I nearly choked on my coffee when I saw what you were growing, Australia has it listed as a prohibited invasive species with fines in some places reaching 130 k ! That being said the fruit are absolutely delicious, in all their purpley goodness! ( does it set fruit in your climate? ) that fella is only going to get bigger, need to work out some support for him , very easy to propagate cut four inch pieces from those “ long toms “ half bury them, length wise, in your coir/ perlite and away you go ! That’s crazy! This wouldn’t grow here naturally at all. But it also doesn’t even fruit at all. He definitely needs a support structure of some sort he is incredibly heavy it’s insane.

Looks like a type of Nopalea, not Opuntia Ficus Indica. If the flowers have stamens sticking out beyond the petals, it's definitely a Nopalea. Aarre Peltomaa
