Fonterra’s 1600 tanker drivers transfer milk across the country. Their heavy load and 90km/h speed limit often means they travel slower than most people. Be patient around heavy vehicles such as tankers and large trucks-only pass when it’s safe.
Because it takes longer to pass a heavy vehicle than it does to pass a car, make sure you have plenty of clear road ahead to safely pass without going over the speed limit. Also, to reduce the risk of a rear-end crash, you need leave a large gap to a heavy vehicle before you move in front of them-because of their weight and the design of their brakes, at 90km/h it takes a heavy vehicle more than twice as far to stop as it takes a car.
