This PSA Video focuses on the importance of sacred tobacco use in Native culture as opposed to the dangers of commercial tobacco use in our ceremonies. The group worked with Carla Rae, of "Imprint" and PBS' Network American Experience "WE SHALL REMAIN: Trail of Tears" fame, to produce and release "Keeping Tobacco Sacred. Carla Rae enlisted the aid of longtime friends, award winning director, producer, cinematographer and editor, John Foutz and formidable native actor/spokesperson John E. Scott-Richardson, a voice for the North Carolina Tribal Tobacco Awareness programs. The PSA was funded by the National Native Network through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control's Office on Smoking and Health.

Hello, glad to see your video and the intent put into it. I am also into keeping tobacco sacred and found out that growing our own tobacco for ceremonial or medicine purposes is the way to go. Cultivating the plant while cultivating our relationship with spirit is of great help to cleanse all those manipulated ideas the tobacco industry had fed us through propaganda. Industrial tobacco has the mechanized vibe in it, and yep, you sure will smoke like a machine disconnected from it's true purpose: praying, cleansing, connecting with the infinite web of life. Good life to y'all and may the seeds of conscious use of tobacco bloom in humanity's garden again, aho!

@@lonestarpatriot6675 Thank you very much for giving me some names of tobacco - much appreciated! I'm confused. Does it mean the names you gave me are tobacco that are chemical free? How do we know which tobacco are chemical free? What do they mean by keeping tobacco sacred? On the one hand I assume they mean having tobacco that is chemical free. But on the other hand, does 'keeping tobacco sacred' mean you only smoke tobacco on very rare occasions as in ceremonies? Because, to be quite honest, I find I have got into the habit of smoking a pipe every day and I suppose that is not a good idea? Many thanks for the information you gave me.
@lonestarpatriot6675
@lonestarpatriot6675 Жыл бұрын
@@wolf7379 Those are tobaccos that are chemical free. Most pipe tobacco will have a slight casing to help creat a uniform flavor across crops. Though this is often a natural casing such as honey. The best way to make sure your pipe tobacco has no chemicals is to stick with premium brands and avoid aromatics. Most (not all) aromatic tobaccos are flavored with artificial flavorings. As for keeping tobacco sacred. Tobacco for natives was originally a ceremonial leaf. Used for prayer and burned as a way to connect with ancestors. From what I understand they believe the smoke would rise and carry your messages to the “heavens” if you will. Europeans came along and started smoking tobacco simply for the pleasure of it. I do think you can strive to find a balance between the two though. Tobacco can be a positive facilitator for many things when not simply smoked for a nicotine fix. A pipe for example can give way to relaxation and meditation. It can also benefit deep intellectual thought. Cigars on the other hand can be an excellent tool for social settings. Two strangers can meet and share a cigar. Immediately putting them on the same page and opening the doorway to friendship and discussion.

When it comes to cigarette tobacco manufacturing in England, well, the rules went out of the window. In fact, you can put just about anything in cigarette tobacco to act as "filler"

When the cigarette companies are done processing tobacco, it’s no longer tobacco. We need to stop calling the use of cigarettes and dip as tobacco usage. As a former cigarette smoker who smokes a pipe, I can say this from extensive first hand knowledge. Open up a cigarette and put the contents next to some pipe tobacco of the types of plant side by side and you’ll see that they are totally different.

Their niches are preservatives, packaging, and distribution. In production, the tobacco is smoke cured by burning tobacco, wood, and other recipe-like ingredients, and the water is evaporated, and the light ash and oil seals seals the natural oils and nicotine in. There is really only 1 brand that rides the culture, and it is the purest available, cigarette wise. Very different, from ceremony tobacco, but the curing, fire safe paper, filter, ink, and adhesive, all add to the chemical list, because it was tested as an entire item, not just inhaled smoke.

Any comercial tobacco that is mass produced will always have some sort of additives and reconstituted material, it's just not in big tobaccos nature to grow organic or leave waste, they are in the business of maximizing their profits not improving your experience. There's an old saying "if you want it done right do it yourself" and at the end of the day that's the only way you will know exactly how your tobacco was made and what is in it.

Siyo.I grew up in a house of smokers, and started smoking at about 9. I quit when I moved out, and after many more years my father died from COPD/Emphysema. My relationship with tobacco was not a good one. I need to allow myself to be open to the sacred use of tobacco and not shun it anymore. There are many herbs I do use like sage and cedar, and hemp. Many others for healing salves and teas. I felt I didn't need tobacco. Maybe I don't, but this video helps me understand that tobacco isn't the enemy. Colonized tobacco is. Wado.

I used to smoke too and I know how addictive it was for and even the habit was so hard to let go of as it made me in some way feel more in control of the moment in that reaching out for my comfort, but I felt that the smoke didn't belong often on the inside. I don't see this as an issue of control over but an intentional choice to breath in life. As much as I felt enjoyment in the moment, I felt the poisoned air: eventually I quit. Your personal choice is yours to make. Having been part of the spiritual practice I understand it much differently now and see the honouring of earth and ancestors in a much different way now.

While I am no expert on the traditional use of tobacco, it seems that many of the commenters don't realize that the scared use of tobacco doesn't involve inhaling the smoke as is done with a cigarette. It is often used as an offering when harvesting other sacred medicines such as sage, cedar or sweetgrass and is not burned. The point of this video is to remind indigenous people that smoking commercial cigarettes is causing extensive harm to the health of the community and that is it disrespecting the scared use of tobacco as an offering and connection to the creator.
