Oh man you are a life saver! I just adopted a 15 year old Senegal Parrot confirmed by his leg ring. He has been with me for three weeks now and is terrified of everything. I am his third and will be his last caretaker unless I pass away prematurely. His previous owner had him for 2 years but have him up because of work leaving him mostly in his cage. He only feels safe on his new cage which has a food and a play station or straight up my shoulder. At night it's an ordeal for him to return inside his cage for bedtime. He says goodnight when the sun goes down and knows it's bedtime. I've started target training him and your video is perfect for me to try it with him. He is gentle but has bit me five times, twice on my ear when I decided to take him with me on a road trip on my shoulder. The speed of the scenery going past him spooked him, so my fault not his. My other three bites were caused by negative reinforcement, so again my bad. Despite my mistakes he quickly forgives and wants so much affection and head scratches that he's always willing to try to understand each other. I am blessed. He really needs A LOT of desensitized training. He is currently afraid of every surface or object. I am taking him to an avian vet soon for some blood work to make sure he is well because I find he shivers quite often when he is alone on his cage but does not when he's on my shoulder. A local Parrot adoption agency have been kind enough to refer me to their vet as well as provide me so much information on properly caring for him. Thanks again for your tip.

@@parrotsco.3224 I confirm that this simple trick works! I was able to play him on his mobile perch! After work I will train him to get off my should if I put him there which is a greater challenge.

@@parrotsco.3224 I will have to revert to a step up stick because after using this trick and not permitting him to climb up my shoulder he sometimes bites me real good as some form of retribution for placing him on his parrot stand. He bit me twice yesterday and once today despite positive reinforcement in giving him a treat. He got to used going straight up his previous owner's shoulders. I was also happy to get him to perch onna shower support post while I was taking a shower but I will to revert to to step up stick for the moment.

@Julia Aston-Busby For the most part my parrot does not bite but because he used to shoulder rushing trying to block him with my thumb often results in a bite mainly because he is scared. I started click training so he steps onto a stick, after that I am hoping he will stop shoulder rushing. Also as soon as he gets on my hand I place him on my shoulder to also try to get him used to me placing him as opposed to shoulder rushing.

Yup!!! That’s how I got my Indian RingNeck from my breeder. Because he shoulders them as babies. So when I got mine she was about 2 months and a half she would climb up straight onto my shoulder and when I try getting her down BAM! I get bit 💀😭😂 I try leaving her on her playground a lot to play with her toys on there and I have other birds so she enjoys interacting with them at times so I let her be on her own. It’s gonna be a hassle but I’ll get there

@@parrotsco.3224 I have a baby African grey still hand feeding him once a day and teaching him the basics like ascending and descending. I will probably free flight him when he is ready, probably with a harness. But for some reason he just screams whenever he sees me or when I let him out of the cage and I have been doing what you said and ignoring him for two weeks now, so can you please tell me if that is a change in hormones while he is growing or will it take longer time of ignoring? I think it may also be due to the fact that he depends on me for food so he always expects me to feed him.

I know this is an old video, but this helped me because I couldn’t understand my bird. It’s not a parrot, but it always wants to be on my shoulder. It doesn’t want anywhere else it’s been only two days since I had this bird the first day he didn’t love me at all he didn’t want me, but then he just wanted me and then wanted to go on my shoulder all the time, he scratches me he bites me he still a baby so it doesn’t hurt but he can’t stop going on my shoulder. Every time I try to put him down he started to fly. He started to climb on me. I don’t want that but I love him and it’s OK with me if he’s on my shoulder but not all the time, I’m trying to do my own business. He’s on my shoulder all the time that’s no good.

You made a very well reasoned and demonstrated video. However, I am not really committed to training and there must be first time parrot owners like me. Firstly, my hand reared rock pebbler whom I bought at fourteen weeks , went to go up my shoulder and I chose him because of that! I didn't know any better so just thought he was being friendly . I really don't find it a problem when he flies to my shoulder as soon as I go to leave the room as he has his favourite high perches and he will step up on my hand so I can place him there if I want to. The only time he might get cross and try to peck me is if I head towards his cage. Fortunately, he knows what "No" means. I don't mean to undermine your message; only to relate my experience with a very amenable species of bird.

I don't mind it being on my shoulder, but it bites when I try to take it off. =/ I think it might be a territorial thing. I don't like it at all. New bird owner. So frustrated... Problem is I've had it for 2 week, it's 6 weeks old now, and it's been on my shoulder most of that time, but has been showing the aggression the last few days :( It's still on a formula diet (learning to forage and eat seeds) so can't quite train yet with treats. Good advice thank you!

I just got my lorikeet about 4 weeks ago Not hand tamed But got him used to me then letting him come to me and in the evening go to sleep at the back of my kneck. But !!!. This has now developed into a war. Where he wants to bite my ear or doesn't want to be touched. So to get him off I have to throw a towel over him. I'm not happy about this situation. He knows how to step up but won't do it off my shoulders. Help.. Got to admit he has gotten to be a very aggressive bird if he doesn't get his own way. Any ideas what I can do about this. I let him out of his cage a lot. But I'm not comfortable with this situation. He was clipped but can now fly for about 3 yards. Anyone any ideas . Thanks
