Wrestling marks have created this really weird community in which they've all convinced themselves that they have some deep understanding of an industry none of them have ever worked for. It really is strange to see and I can't understand why they keep growing.
@UnknownJorge3 күн бұрын
That's just fandom in general. People think they can write a Lord of the Rings series better than Tolkien. People think that they write a better ending to Game of Thrones better than Martin. They think they can make a better video game than Miyamoto. People thought they could do Star Wars better than Lucas. In 2024, wrestling is a nerdy hobby, and nerds love that type of content.
@imfreviews3 күн бұрын
The same reason Flat Earthers exist. We are in a world now where, if you don't like the way it is, you don't change your thinking to fit reality, you change reality to fit your thinking. In previous ages, people who did that would die of hunger or disease because other people wouldn't bother trying to take care of them - they had their own problems. Not making a value judgment about society, just saying.
@zeromagnum28113 күн бұрын
yeah. As a long time fan of wrestling. And a creative minded person. I can say that I have a creative understanding enough that i believe i could book a wrestling card. But am also smart enough to know that since i have never done it professionally for a tv show that I don't know all the ins and outs like those who have done it and would need to learn that before i was to actually be the main booker for a wrestling show. No matter how creative one might be without learning a job for awhile under those that do it you won't fully know what you are doing and that is true for any job. Wrestling marks more often than not are just arrogant and won't admit what i just said. Because while i feel like it is something i could creatively do if i wanted to. I'm not arrogant enough to think i can do it better right now than those who have done it for years at a pro level. Understanding the wrestling psychology of story line narratives on how to build a feud is only a part of it. Because to do it at that level you have to know how to format for tv, you have to be able to manage the egos of the talent you are booking for. You'd have to be able to adjust creative should any wrestler get hurt and mess up a planned story. It would never be as simple as a egotistical mark likes to think it would be just because they are fanboys and understand wrestling a little bit from the perspective of watching matches.

"they've all convinced themselves that they have some deep understanding of an industry none of them have ever worked for." Hence my definition of a mark: Smark = smart mark = someone who thinks he knows more about wrestling than the people who work in it do.

I really don't think the dirt sheets are the problem. They're just people who figured out a way to make money, can't really knock them for that. This 100%. Myself or any one of these commentors could start a podcast or dirtsheet today and we'd be just as knowledgeable as the the average goofballs doing them now. But then compared to the Konnan/Discos, Cornettes, Bischoffs, etc. we know absolutely nothing, nothing being generous. We can't pull the curtain back, we don't know how a match gets laid out, never been in a booking meeting. It doesn't mean these fans have no right to an opinion or shouldn't ever podcast but there's a huge difference between a podcast by a mark and a podcast by guys with decades of experience.

I don't know if you need to have worked in the wrestling business to understand booking, I'd be interested in what a good writer could do if they had some experience in improv and understood how to listen to the audience, but there are a lot of skills you need that are much easier to acquire when you're in the industry. The trouble is, and a reason why I guess a lot of wrestlers struggle when they try to book, is a booker needs to get when something is not working, and know how to transition the angle/storyline whatever. Most writers, and many wrestlers will likely have an ego where they won't admit their great idea is not working. Jennifer Pepperman for example doesn't get anything about the bodyguard storyline if she is writing for Mone, and it has unintentionally buried Camille. I hope Freddie Prince Jr gets a chance somewhere, just to see how he gets on, he at least had some experience in WWE, but I'm not confident he'll knock it out of the park either...
