As always, very comprehensive, informative and entertaining video. Always appreciate your time, and effort put forth into these reviews. There is not too many people who could put together a 1 hour video regarding a bait review, and keep people watching till the end. I agree with you about NJ bass, being 5lbs as a benchmark for quality fish, and 7 to 8 being a trophy for our region. Don't get me wrong, any bass is exciting to catch, but that 5lb plus size takes it to a whole new appreciation. Looking forward to the next one.

Awesome video man, I think I have 4 or 5 myself they are great baits. Your "swimbaiting the northeast" series is what really got me into the big baits. Now that you've gotten that high 7 and been doing the big baits a while do you think you'll do like a "5 year (or however many it's been)" recap type video of swimbaiting the area, things you've learned, what's been the most successful approaches in your mind?
@KeepinItReelFishing5 жыл бұрын
Thats a great idea MassYak, but I would treat it like a big project (just like those Swimbait the Northeast) vids. They took me a WHILE back when I did them (and I didn't have much on my plate). Now life is much busier so that would be a seriously tough endevor. Heck, this video I chipped away at editing over the course of 5 months! I have learned a lot though.....maybe I will do something and keep it very simple. The info is the important part anyway....not all the b-roll and side clips. I'll see.

That's the "OG" Diawa TD Zillion. I'm using that same reel throughout all fishing clips in this video.

So I finally fished this bait today for the first time. I have to reel slooooow (6.3 gear ratio) in order to get the bait to wake. If I speed it up just a little it starts diving and no more wake. Is this the norm? Thanks, man.

Are you using mono or braid? Keeping rod tip up? There is no variation on the lip angle being they are injection molded....so they should all run darn near identical. I think there is variability in people's definition of "slow" too. What you consider slow another angler might think is more medium/moderate. All depends on your style of fishing. As you can see from the various swim clips in the video it can be waked very slow and slow, but yes...if you go to a "standard' retrieve speed of course the lip is going to 'bite' into the water and dig down. You not reeling like you would with a spinnerbait or crank bait (unless of course you WANT it to crank). If you are looking to go fast with a wake look for one with a nearly vertical lip angle. Although I must say through years of using this and other wakes slow retrieves are overwhelmingly where its at....especially for bigger bites.

@@KeepinItReelFishing Thanks for the reply. I am using 12# Yo-Zuri right now. And I have fished many wakebaits over the years, but this one especially I have to reel REALLY slow to get it to wake. I'm sure I'll get used to it, especially when/if I have success with it.

@@Twangtown7 yes this is correct... speed it up to get it under water, I work it up and down sometimes, get em to hit on the burn. especially after a long cast... burn it down quick, slow it down to come back up

Karl, the Black Dog website says "not secure". Can't find these lures. Please help if you can. Thank you.

Hi Frank - I had noticed that a few days ago too. I'm not sure what it was about, but the past two days or so the site has been loading normally. All of the 'custom' colors are currently sold out. They'll definitely be putting up more, but I couldn't say when. They do have three of the standard colors available, Bright Bluegill, Ghost Bluegill, and Mystery Black. People get caught up in the 'custom' stuff, but realistically the bright gill and ghost gills are my staple colors and probably all you need. I do also really like the white one, in case you wanted one of those swimbaitcity.com has that color as well.

@@KeepinItReelFishing Thank you very much. Continued success to you. By chance, are you an engineer by trade?

@@franky5610 Thanks Frank. No, not an engineer. I'm work in a eletro-mechanical profession, but not nearly at an engineering level.
