My favourite description of ‘Saltburn’ was it is ‘Talented Mr Ripley’ meets ‘Brideshead Revisited’ meets ‘Fall of the House of Usher’.

SPOILER ALERT for Saltburn - Barry Keoghan's revealed to actually be pretty middle class (in the British sense) and going to a school surrounded by old money and aristocrats, which might kind of measure up with Fennel's private schooling life. In British public schools, there are those who are well off - and those who are outlandishly rich and posh.

when you interviewed Emerald, you hadn't watched the movie yet? Or were you just reserving the pan for when she's not there? Just saying it would have been a great opportunity to ask those (now seemingly) rhetorical questions and have them actually answered by the one person who actually could

I haven't seen Saltburn but I just wanna say I respect you guys for criticizing Emerald's work after having her on last week, it shows neutrality!

Even if she was ten, I'd want Babs in "Hello Dolly," such is her musical comedy talent- when she sings "Before the Parade Passes By," her conviction and focus is such that you completely buy it, even knowing a 26-year-old probably has two or three decades to go until she might be pondering missing the boat. Matthau is a non-factor in the movie and should have been asking Streisand for tips, not acting like Henry VIII around her.

I feel your Saltburn review really spoke to what I feel about the movie: it was fun while it lasted but what with the "twist", I just don't think it worked and says very little of note while being quite (entertainingly, at first) muddled about it. Actually reminds me of this quote: "The higher and lower classes, there's some good in them, but the middle classes are all affectation and conceit and pretense and concealment". That was Lord Melbourne, early Victorian era Prime Minister and aristocrat. Make of that what you will.

Hearing your take on Saltburn was more satisfying to me than the actual movie. I hated it precisely because it had so much potential that was squandered. Fantastic actors giving great performances, beautiful visuals, interesting and important topics, early 2000s nostalgia. BUT it has zero point of view and the most lacklustre ending. The press tour was more titillating than the movie was.

Promising young woman gave me style over substance immediately and when I watched Saltburn I was hoping for improvement and it did give a bit but yet again it felt like style over substance. The concept, narrative, characters, and climax is not fleshed out. The difference between both films is that this film had more shock value elements but unfortunately it’s still style over substance.

Random thing I just remembered: Please find a way to relitigate the Hassan Minhaj story now that he has put out his explanation video. In my mind, he’s fully vindicated and I don’t think you gave him a fair shake. Love you!
@mister_manager10 ай бұрын
Honestly I agreed until I realized how many of the allegations he left out in his explainer, eg. his female writers and factcheckers had openly called the production toxic and a boys' club. But how much of that is actually down to Hasan himself is debatable!

I like Emerald’s directing and writing and yes, I’m sure being rich had contributed to her success. But I still want to see the movie. I grew up what was lower middle class and would now be called working class. I have a lot of writing ideas that will never be published because I don’t have rich people connections. But I can still appreciate a good story.

OMG. This Saltburn review is so painfully clueless.... You guys are expert film critics and just miss half of the subtext of the film?! It's not her, it's definitely both of you that don't get the visual and class language that she is using so very deftly. And then to go on and say that you don't understand the Black American character or what she's signaling with the lunch after his death? Are we being for real? I've been wanting to movie podcast for ages and this review has me SCREAMING at my screen... you might just have pushed me to make the step to #JustDoIt

1:03. Thank you white guy …. I hate that the other guy is acting like the directors background means she has to make a movie a certain way. What world are we living in. This is ART!! She can make a movie however she wants, without having to incorporate her own life experiences into it - and you have every right to not like it - but don’t say she has to make a movie a certain way. Never watching this show again - the guy on the left irks me so bad.

Great ep with Todd Haynes - whose work is always inspiring. You two really lost me with your poor analysis of SALTBURN's 3rd Act. I could not disagree more. You guys come off as jaded & strangely puritanical in this segment, & I think you're both better than that. Yeah, you say the film is good - I think it's much more than just good, & disagreements are fine, it's what makes the world go 'round. But your sudden mediocre mainstream esthetic applied to this last segment is extremely annoying to this fan. I'll subscribe, all the same, 'cuz you guys talk intelligently about art - but for god's sake, take some fucking risks and think outside the box once in a while, especially in regards to a fantastic film like SALTBURN.
