In this video, we install Firestone Ride-Rite with a VIAIR constant duty onboard air system and 60 gal Transfer Flow mid-ship fuel tank. You can find links to these products here www.amazon.com... and direct links below.
We added Firestone Ride-Rite to our first truck and had great results. Our Grand Design Reflection 312BHTS is 12,000 fully loaded and the tongue weight is enough to drop the backend a few inches. Being able to control the air pressure of the air bags from the cab is a nice feature, but as long as I was adding a tank, it was a no-brainer to install the VIAIR constant duty onboard air system. Having 150 psi available at all times for air tools and being able to fill the truck and trailer tires is beyond nice to have.
We’ve teamed up with Firestone, VIAIR & Transfer Flow for this video. These are products that we selected based on their reputation or our personal experience and we reached out to them first. They provided the product for us to share the install process and provide an honest review. We couldn't be happier with how all these products are performing so far and will share more information from the road.

We built the bullet and bought a GD 337 5th wheel. Added an Anderson Ultimate 5th wheel Hitch. We had Firestone air bags, but had to remove them and change them to a different mounting style due to the B&W goose neck hitch added to the frame. Took our maiden voyage to Fool Hollow in Showlow, AZ for the test drive. No issues with the truck or GD. Using your spreadsheet b4 buying the GD our 2008 F250 fit within the parameters and worked like a champ.

When he gets home from work he's definitely going to be watching this. And, definitely looking forward to next week's solar video. Thank you for sharing your upgrades with us and taking the time to talk us through each step. You have no idea how helpful you are! Hopefully you all are having fun traveling north! Drive safely!

From videos seen on YT and other places I was under the impression that a properly-tuned WDH made the tow vehicle and trailer ride level. I was also "informed" that bags were just for leveling payload in the truck by itself. Maybe you should mention that bags don't actually increase payload capacity since that's set by the mfgr, axle, and tire ratings. ☺

Our TT is under 7,000lbs so we are good but yes, it is important to pay attention to GCVWR...hence the reason we upgraded the 1500 as soon as we did...it will be paid off in 5 years just in time for retirement and a new TT...maybe even a small Ginger-type and brand. :)

You will really enjoy the air bags. I did the same thing on my one ton but built the mounts and system myself using air bags off a transport as I haul huge weights and also have 120 gallon fuel capacity total on my truck. Oh and the switches are call upfitter or body builder switches. That is one thing I really like about the new dodge and ford vehicles is the factory added switches for accessories and not have to cut into the vehicle

Another Great Video. I love the idea of an onboard compressor with tank and air to the bumper. After 25 trips up or down the ALCAN in the past 27 years, the last few years you can always find fuel day or night, summer or winter. But having more fuel range than you want to drive in one day is awesome. We have a 5th wheel and after we stop for the night we find the cheapest fuel in the area and fill up for the next day without worrying about getting in and out with the trailer. Enjoy your adventure and we look forward to meeting you when you get to the The Last Frontier.

I did the same thing 60 Gal. tank but different brand because my older track had the same brand and it was great so I stayed with that brand. I went with the wireless Airbag compressor with a pod to set the pounds. The tank is great now I can pick the fuel station i want. I drove to WA from CA and averaged 25 MPG so I didn't have to stop for gas but that was not pulling my trailer, pulling I get 12 to 14 MPG pulling a 35' 5th wheel. You will be happy with the tank and air bags for sure!

Super jealous! Nice job on teaming up with some GREAT partners! Viair is THE name in portable air compressor systems. Onboard air is sooo convenient! Firestone is also my choice for air bags. I installed AirLift bags but found they rode very harsh on my Tundra when unloaded. Switched to Firestone and the ride was almost as smooth as stock. I'm also glad you mentioned WDH and airbags. Too many times I see folks not taking the time to dial in their WDH and simply adding bags when their rigs are still sagging. Just as you said, this simply REDUCES that weight distributing properties of the hitch!

Another option I really like are the "Tool and fuel" boxes. They go on the fillter neck and gravity feed fuel from a toolbox in the bed. They're universal, so cheaper than the transferflow setups and add storage capacity to the truck. I have my eye on a 60 gallon unit to add to my 38 gallon truck tank.
@KeepYourDaydream

Scott L I do too, but I couldn’t sacrifice any room in the bed being FT with a TT. I’m light on storage. I think that would be a great solution for pulling a fifth wheel.

Yea I will miss my big toolbox when I get one. The big box is full now and the tool+fuel ones are much smaller tool capacity. As a non-full-timer, I have plenty of space in my bed.

The VIAIR would be good for those that go off road at the beach to refill our tires! Also like the idea that it is aftermarket. Had a Mazda MPV years ago that we could inflate air levelers to tow. When the compressor Mazda had on it went bad, they wanted a ton of money to replace it so we did added some air tubes to manually inflate it. Thank you for the great idea.

Hey Marc one thing I would definitely go buy before you get into the desolate areas is a code reader or the edge insight monitor so if you have any issues on the road you can check it and even clear the code if it’s not a major issue. Like if the dumb emissions crap decides to put the truck into limp mode you can have a chance to keep moving and not stuck on the side of the road.

Getting fuel in the summer is usually not a problem, just fill up at every major town which are about 300 miles apart. Winter, getting fuel after dark is an issue going up there. Just don't drive after dark as you increase your odds of hitting a moose darting across the highway. Even in a full size truck if one hits a moose, a lot of times kills the occupants too.

Reading the comments, I too was wondering about the water in the air lines. Most air compressors have a drain valve or petcock to get the water out that was made during the compression process. Maybe you could give an update (I may need to just watch further ahead in another video) as to how this worked out. Also the boys would really dig an airhorn set up on the truck. Just saying.

Another Classic KYD Video. My thoughts, free of course: You used a good looking install facility; clean/organized/and busy. Both modifications look to be well thought out and researched. Good job, Trish. All I could improve is the use of "double nuts" at every opportunity. Tough to do now that they are dirty, but that's what boys are for, and I use a "Dyno Labeler" and post the required air pressure on every rim. Waterproof labels, of course. Don't scrimp on valve caps, and as for air horns; to heck with the boys, get some. Moose tend to respect them. Prius', not so much. Once again, great video.

Keep Your Daydream no worries, it is not the first or last crazy thing I will hear about Alaska. The ALCAN will be your biggest adventure, once you cross the US/Canada border it is smooth sailing. Biggest piece of advice for the ALCAN, take your time and once you are in the Yukon, stop and top off your gas tank at every town, some towns are over a 100 miles apart. Biggest piece of advice for Alaska, have bug spray and blackout curtains because the mosquitos are huge and the sun never goes down.

If the air fitting doesn't have one, you should get some kind of rubber boot / cover for it. It's a great idea putting it where they did, but water and road dirt, even on the paved highways, will work into the fitting and causing it to jam up and either not open or not seal when you connect your air hose. Or worse, when you release the hose, it won't seal right and will leak down causing ride issues with the air bags.
@scottmaschino1927
@scottmaschino1927 6 жыл бұрын
Almost forgot... A cover needs to go all the way to the base of the fitting down by where the fitting goes through the metal, not just the end. There are small bearings under the part that slides back. Those will rust up with moisture and sand will pack into the area preventing it from sliding.

Why isn't a generator a more useful investment than a compressor? Watching other channels, it feels like the first accessory I should buy for my trailer. BTW love the details in this.

We did solar and lithium. It's more money, but now there is no difference between RV parks and dry camping. Next weeks vid. My only beef with a generator is I never wanted to pull it out of the truck and setup for what ever I wanted to do. Coffee, charge a computer, etc. It was always, Eh... I'll wait. The onboard gens in Class A's or toy haulers are nice, but our rig won't fit one of those.

Great video. As Ricky Bobby said, "I think I got a chubby". Love the Transfer flow tank. Excellent choice. Can't wait to get our Firestone airbags and Viair setup done to our truck. That's some decent mileage for the setup you got. Can't wait to see the solar install. Wish we could chase you up to Alaska, but, one day. You all enjoy. Be safe. Safe travels. Later

I have put the air bags in, and have a 60 gallon aux tank that is bed mounted. The setup I have has a valve and switch so I don't have to pump fuel from one tank to another and a gage mounted on the A pillar. That gives me a total of 86 gallons. Not towing anything, I have driven from St. Louis to Charlotte and still had 1/4 tank in the aux and 1/2 tank in my main. An sir pump will be my next mod.

Hi there - I have been following your KZbin channel for quite some time. I’ve tried to leave comments, without any luck. I found out I needed to upgrade to google plus surprise! Ha! Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. Very helpful and entertaining. You must be just about ready to leave for Alaska! So exciting. Are your car seats dry yet? Lots of tears! I’m sure it was hard to leave your daughter at college: exciting and sad to. Safe travels!! Janice

With the fuel range you have now, the next must have for less stress is the oil bypass system. I don’t trust manufacturers oil change intervals, especially with the fine soot that makes it’s way into the oil, and fuel/oil dilution that comes from the DPF regen process. 8k mile road trip on one oil change, and cleaner oil? On the Cassiar and Alcan highways, lack of fuel availability is mostly a myth. I’ve seen a few gasoline pumps covered when out of gas, be glad you’re driving a diesel. Diesel fuel is everywhere in Canada. It’s the summer tourist season, even the smallest towns know how to make money by extending their business hours. :) The one item we found in short/no supply, if you drive a modern diesel. Is DEF, and when you can find it? Be prepared to pay for it. Larger towns will have it, but you’ll still get gouged for it. People drive like crazy on those remote roads, slow down and move as far over as possible when others are around. And you’ll come back with the windshield and all the paint left on your rig. Road trip of a lifetime, enjoy!

Great modification. I had the Viair added to my 2018 F450 from the dealer so I would say you got it done cheaper knowing how much dealers charge per hour. My truck has dual tanks so I didn't need tank upgrade, smart on your part because gas stations aren't as close in Alaska as in lower 48. Good info, keep up the good work. You know you going to put the horn's on, come on go for it!!!! Keep the rubber on the road.

Nice. I thought you were Class A. Did you change rigs? If we move to 5er, we'll strongly consider F450. The boys should have horns. Trish says I'm not responsible enough. She's right. That first uplifter switch is where it will go!

Keep Your Daydream I am class a but I have a truck for home and local trips going buggy ridding. I am not a full time RV traveler just weeks at a time. I have two hundred acres at home witch is a Morton building 150'X300' with living quarters. So I'm still a part time traveler.

you also might want to look into upgrading your trailer tires to 17.5 inch with 16 ply so you don't have to worry about getting flats on the rough potholed roads

definitely an upgrade from stock tires, another suggestion would be to lower your gain on trailer brakes on rough roads to help keep the wheels from locking up on braking as the trailer can bounce more that the truck, sharp rocks and pavement edges kill tires, also carry a plug kit for emergency roadside repairs to get you to nearest town for real repairs, have fun in Alaska it's an awesome experience

Those are excellent upgrades. Really well done and having air for anything off the truck is way cool. I just started watching and the last episode I saw your we’re in the F150 with over 100K miles walking through why that truck worked. Which episode did you migrate to the new diesel? Did you provide some perspectives on that in the episode?
