Kef 104/2 speakers driven by forte 4 amplifier. VTL TL2 preamplifier and Proceed PDP3 and PDT3. impressed by this system sound. I never took off my B&W801 S3 speaker to test other ones, not the case with these Reference Kef Speaker with great soundstage, unique mids and clear focused highs. Cables: Kimber 8TC, Wireworld goldstarlight (ebu), Discovery blue-four, kimber PBJ or Madrigal HPC from pre to amp.

The audio here is not a mic’d recording of the speakers. It is a feed straight from the cd player

These were some of the best rated speakers back then. I believe the woofers were completely mounted internally (coupled cavity design as KEF termed it) with all the bass sound emanating from that large front opening. I wish i bought them back then.

l mean what woofer mounted internally as l was using KEF 102.2 book shelf which screwed the bass unit at back of speaker.

I've always been fascinated by those 104/2, always had an yes on those, listened to them couple of times, but never pulle the trigger, as if they are still being very good decades later, they are a real pain to service, and they do need service : the ferrofluid tweeter, the hard to reach woofers...

I’ve owned a pair of these since 1985 when I saved up enough money. Best speakers imho. I couldn’t help but notice the black top distribution insulators on the floor. Are you a lineman like me?

Hello, Ricardo! Please tell me if Kef reference 105.3s speakers are available ... I plan to purchase a Mark Levinson 27 power amplifier. Will a preamplifier VTL 2.5 be a good option? and in general, will it be a good system and combination? With all respect, Andrew
@rsmlabs
@rsmlabs 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, sorry for the delay to answer. ML series 20 and tubes like VTL are a great match. Is very dificult to find a 105.3 in perfect shape. Regards.

I have the same speakers & have had them since 1985 & love them. They were at the upper range for me to buy & I’m glad I own them all these years later. I couldn’t help but notice the 5000 volt porcelain post top insulator pins on the floor. Black top insulators are for bare wire just so you know. Not jacketed wire. They are for bare wire tied into them with a copper or aluminum tie wire. I know the purpose is to keep them off the floor. I had to comment because I’m a power lineman for a living. If you need more? I might be able to find those for you? 🤫🫢🤔 I noticed you were using wooden blocks instead of more insulators?

Hi Ricardo, nice set up, congrats. How would you compare the KEF 104/2's to the B&W 801's. You say they sound close, even the bass response? I am thinking of getting a pair and right now I own B&W DM6's which sound pretty nice...thx
@rsmlabs
@rsmlabs 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie: both speakers with complete mods sound very close. great focus and soundstage. deep and clear bass but 801s takes avantages of atack and definition. Kef mids are very neutral but more analitical than B&W. Kef are easier to move with small power amplifiers and also to get better sounstage in few steps. Your DM6 are great and you can improve very much their sound eliminating many bottleneck inside them. soon i will add a speaker mods video. Thank you

@@rsmlabs Hi ! thanks a lot for the very kind reply. i understand it is a Nelson Pass design ? similar to Threshold line ? i have noticed that some low power amps seem to sound more energetic than higher power amps ... Like in the bass I guess it must have to do with the current delivery ? kind regards, gino

very cheap!. i believe they will fail on tweeters sound because the ferrofluid on magnet got dry after many time. woofers rubbers maybe are broken, I think they can work great but will need some restoration.

Unfortunately at this age these speakers require major servicing, replacing rotten foam plugs on the woofer cones, cleaning out and replacing dried-out ferrofluid in the tweeters and replacing capacitors. Very fiddly and time-consuming.
@rsmlabs
@rsmlabs Жыл бұрын
hello: that's right. these speakers require cleaning the ferrofluid that over time is no longer liquid. More than 40 parts in the xover except inductors were changed. Internal cables have been upgraded and all pressure or contactc connections have been replaced by silver/gold solder
