I used to want to watch the anime, but I once read somewhere that Kumiko was supposed to date a boy, and this boy is the part of the main cast in the original materials. But the studio decided to make Kumiko gay and make the boy an unimportant side character. I hate it when: a character in manga get adapted into the anime with different orientation (like straight → gay, or gay → straight), and; a character in the manga's main cast is demoted into an unimportand side character. Did I get it wrong?

It's somehow true, but not quite. Kumiko, throughout the first season was suggested to have a "strong relationship" with Reina. The boy she was supposed to date (IDK if it's from the manga or original, old novel) does only have minor appearance and Kumiko kinda rejects his advance. But I heard a lot of things change in season 2 and the movie that kinda retcon her suggested "more-than-a-friend" relationship with Reina.

But despite those I really suggest you watch the anime if you like school slice-of-life romance story, and the character design, the art is really beautiful (made by Kyoto Animation). The voice acting is awesome too

I dislike romance because 90% of the time, the boy takes all the screentime. Kumiko is the mc. Having romance would mess up the plot. I like an easy going slice of life without the boy drama.
