Keiko’s journey from captivity to the Oregon Coast | KGW Vault

Many remember Keiko, star of the movie “Free Willy,” and his journey in the late ‘90s to Oregon and then home to Iceland. During that whole saga, KGW reported on Keiko - his arrival in Newport and then his departure - many times.

Keiko died in Taknes Bay, Skålvikfjord, Norway, while swimming in the fjords on 12 December 2003, at the age of 27. Pneumonia was determined as his probable cause of death.

Yeah :( Too bad they didn't just keep him in Newport. I remember when they released him and I started seeing stories of him approaching people. I knew he'd never adapt properly.
