Keira Knightly DOES NOT UNDERSTAND the character & fate of Anna Karenina at all! She calls Anna "a duplicitist and deceptive' while Karenina was NOTHING of the kind -- the more so greater her TRAGEDY! Keira should understand the social context of the era when women were given away in arranged marriages. Hence Anna's only "duplicity and deceptiveness" or sin was to have fallen in love outside of marriage. She IS NOT one of the ADULTERESSES of our time who continue to be unfaithful to their husbands or have multiple affairs when they could divorce them and remarry! NO such option for Karenina who DID NOT LEAD A DOUBLE LIFE -- even though her status allowed her to take a lover, which was not uncommon in those days in high circles since marriage was more the question of social rank and not true love or intimacy, Anna chose to leave her husband whereby she lost not only the custody of and the seeing rights to her only child, whom she loved dearly, but was completely shut out of and isolated from her social circle! She could not REMARRY, move on and HAVE a normal life with Vronsky because her husband would not give her a divorce. The fact that her child was used as a tool of revenge against her and that she was cut out from normal social life, unlike her partner who was still being pursued by marrying girls and considered a great catch, with even his mother playing a match-maker behind Anna's back, all these things eventually drove Anna to desperation, paranoia and suicide! THAT is the TRAGEDY of Anna Karenina and NOT HER DUPLICITY or DECEPTIVENESS -- at least according to Anna's maker, Leo Tolstoy! It's a PITY that a male novelist could better comprehend the personality of a female character than the actress who actually portrayed her on the screen, regardless of how "lovely, sweet and talented" the actress might be !!!

@@bogdanlevi7483 I see what you are saying but if you had a choice of leaving with a handsome man or leaving your only child what would you choose. Leaving a child can kill them.

Together with Sophie Marceau's, the worst Anna Karenina ever. A superficial, ridiculous performance which does not even go near to rendering the range of feelings and emotions conveyed by Tolstoy's character. It is an obviously challenging part, yet Ms Knightly is too poor an actress to even think of playing it in an acceptable way.

the movie itself was a new reinterpretation of the book, it is not meant to be like it or convey the same message, the director said this himself. if people wanted the exact same scenes and exact same plot and values and temperances, they can just read the book. that is not what films are for
