With such a big track cycling scene in Japan i struggle to think why they don't dominate the international circuit,

The scene is sponsored mainly by betting and with it come restrictions. They aren't payed extra for the wins and they don't have personal sponsorships. This effects athetes state of mind, how far will he go to successed.

Interesting fact: There are so many keirin racers who smoke. My dad was a racer and he smoked for all his life. My bro-in-law is a racer and he still smokes.

Track racers used to smoke to get used to the humid environment of the velodrome and because the audience would smoke... apparently

because they crash. just like how they use steel frames instead of aluminum or carbon fiber... because they're durable.. so even after crashing, their bikes are still usable.

because they earn more money cycling in keirin than cycling anywhere else.
