Charles Lloyd, leader, composer, horns & flute Ron McLure, bass Jack DeJohnette, drums Keith Jarrett, piano What a great band. (I think McLure, who is great, replaced Cecil McBee, also great.) Sometimes they played way out there. I saw them one of those times in '68 or '69 when they opened for a third rate rock band that had a current cover hit. (Vanilla Fudge, I think) THEY PLAYED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS!! The crowd thought the Martians had landed and was yelling at them starting at about 20 minutes in and never stopped - but the band just did their thing. They were so focused. If you don't know Lloyd's album "Dream Weaver" you have to check it out. Also the classic "Forest Flower" Over the years my appreciation of DeJohnette has kept increasing. What a great musician!!

I watched all iterations of the Charles Lloyd quartet at the Showboat in Philadelphia in the 60s. My favorite group was with Cecil McBee on bass. He was so melodic in his solos and really swung. I was fascinated by the overflowing talent of a young Keith Jarrett and loved Lloyd's idiosyncratic playing and especially his dancing. Of course Keith continued to grow into one of the greatest musicians in the world, accompanied to this day by the great Jack DeJonnette.

I just saw Keith jarrett and the trio at the NJPAC on Dec 1. . This was the only us performance in the US. It was the best time I have seen this trio. Keith Jarrett is in top playing mode and he blew the piano to pieces on the 3rf encore Straight no Chaser.

Think it was KJ dancing around with the soprano that scared them.
